Wondering about a lead additive, is one better than the other, is it neccesary on every fill-up? Gary

Didn't you put stainless steel parts in your heads or are they completely stock?

All you need is steel seats in the exhaust side if you don't want to run a lead additive. Not really sure if one is better when it comes to additives.

didn't put the stainless in, just went with the larger valves......dropped the ball on that one

I put 4 oz of Marvel Mystery oil in the gas tank for every 10 gallons of gas. No raps, no taps, no problems. I can't offer any solid evidence that it works other than none of my engines have blown up yet!!

If you ever do valve seats, you don't need stainless, just steel and only on the exhaust side, and doing the intakes won't hurt anything either while the heads are off if you have a little extra money.

I doubt if you can buy a lead additive. I can't see the EPA allowing it to be sold. I think all you'll find is a lead SUBSTITUTE, and I think the jury is still out on whether or not they help. I don't run hardened seats in any of my Ys, including a working truck, and have had no valve failures. I do check the adjustments, and the truck will tighten up the exhaust clearance a couple thousandths a year. Probable will need hardened seats some day. John in Selma, IN

You really can't buy lead additives at all. tetra-ethyl lead was banned many years ago.
If you want to try leaded gas in your Ford, go over to your local airport and get some 100 octane avgas (currently exempt from the ban) , You'll have to tell them it's for your homebuilt airplane or they may not sell it to you.
100 octane avgas has about 3ml TEL per gallon.
If you put it in your car and drive it on the highway you'll be violating federal law.
I ran my 57 Ford Fairlane all thru high school in the late 60's and early 70's on unleaded gasoline and didn't use any snake oil additives at all. I never had a problem with it.
It had a 292 in it and it was stock.
