292 Y block pistons

Hi guy's, I'm collecting parts for my 292 and have just started to look at Pistons, I already have a Isky cam and a Edelbrock 3 x 2 holley 94 setup and a mallory dual point dizzy.

Its going into a 1929A Roadster Pickup with a C4 Auto.

I'm not looking for a wild engine but some thing with a bit of power and usable, was thinking of ging with something like 9.5-1 ratio.

Your comments would be appreciatted.

Langy, Whatever pistons you buy ,make sure you check the weight compared to a stock piston.?? There are a few brands out there that are very heavy .John Mummert seems to be one of the better vendors to deal with ( in my opion).Look at getting  your block decked to zero , this will lift your compression.Good luck

Hi homespun, I'm using ECZ-G heads, My 292 came with low compression heads but i am doing a swap with a guy.

The engine is in very good condition but i will bore it anyway. Our fuel is quite a bit better than the U.S. fuel so can run slightly higher. Yes i do aim to CC the heads, The engine will get a full balance and i will do shot peening etc etc.

I'm looking for a nice reliable engine that will be useable but have a reasonable amount of power.

This is my first Y block and i'm not as familiar with them as i am with other Ford's & Chevy's, over here the norm is SBC or SBF but i'm just fed up with seeing the same old thing, Hence my other current project is a 394 Olds.

Lon no chance getting piston's here i'm afraid, Nothing available from the U.K. at all actually. I get all my parts from the U.S. and have spoken to John Mummert a few times, He is very helpfull and has an excellent service.

I have a shop building Hotrod's here in the U.K. but mainly the engines used are SBC, BBC, SBF & BBF which i'm very familair with, I'm trying to get my customers to try alternative engines to be a little different but its not easy as they are a fair bit more expensive to build than the SBC & SBF  :-)

Forgot to say i've been offered a set of Hi-Lift rockers ECG6564-B2 1.5 ratio, What are yor opinions ???

Those are the higher lift rocker arms but don't let them get over on your for price. There is a company on EBAY selling new cast high lifts for the Y-Block for a little over $100. Also I'm sure there are some good used sets floating around. Depends on shipping costs to the UK. Have you looked at the Event and personel sections here? We have several Y-Block powered race cars in the 8 to 9 second quarter mile bracket. There are also dozens of 12-14 second full bodied cars around. Y-Blocks got a bum rap in the 50's and 60's and are now back with a vengence. Also check out the link to Rebop casting. Hot rods look great with polishied aluminum front covers, water pumps, 4bbl intake etc. etc.. Frank, a member of this group, has been providing some top quality reproduction parts for the Y-Blocks and the McCullouch supercharge setups for years. Check it out!

Thanks homespun, Those rockers seem fairly plentifull, I've used Maddog racing quite a few times for my Olds parts and they are very good. So you think they are worth using then ?

The man you should talk to is Ted ( Doc ) Eaton. He's probably forgotten more information on pistons than the rest of the group know ? Has been known to build a few Y-Blocks as well .
