It has been a long time since I have set valve timing on a Yblock.
I am aware of counting the 12 pins on the chain to set the timing.  I set #1 valves to TDC and checked #6 at TDC. But having trouble setting the gears.  Are the cam and the crank keys ways set at the 3 clock position looking from the front of the engine?  Or is there another way to set the keyways on the cam and crank?
Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks

The dots on the crank and cam gears are at the 3 o'clock position as  you are looking at them from the front of  the engine.  Twelve pins between the dots is correct.  You may have to tweak ;one of the gears slightly  to  get both keys to align with their keyways.

If I set the timing marks at the 3 o'clock position the keys are set 3'oclock for the crank, 5 o'clock for the cam.  Is this correct?

I am getting different information on how to set valve timing. I have tried to set it up as described. The info I have from another post on yblocks forever. I have on site that says cam should be set at 6 position and the crank should be in the 12 o’clock position. Any help would be appreciated.
Sorrow to bother you again. I am trying to post the article but can’t seem to do it. Larry

Use the picture above.  That is how it should be set up.

Larry.  Regardless of where the camshaft and crankshaft keys reside, it’s twelve pins on the chain between the outside gear marks.  The cam gear at six o’clock and the crank gear at 12 o’clock will still have the chain at 12 pins between the outside marks but the outside marks will no longer be at 3 o’clock.

If you really want to verify the cam timing, then it will be necessary to go through the process of degreeing in the camshaft with a degree wheel and dial indicator to ensure that the camshaft is residing where the manufacturer intended it to be.  Manufacturing variances and especially tolerance stack ups can have the camshaft off significantly although the marks and pin count are in the ballpark.
