Howdy all,

well I did it again, I'm venturing into unknown territory!

I purchased a complete Impco dual fuel set up for a V-8 engine complete with 35 gallon tank. (the tank might not be usable though)

It looks fairly straightforward for the installation.

anyone ever try propane to power their Y?

I've never done it,but a friend did it to a new 56 Fairlane 292.They used all propane powered tractors on their farm so it was easy to keep the car fueled. He drove that car for over 35 years and when he parked it,it had almost 400,000 miles on an untouched engine. It still ran like a new car,but the body was falling off it.That's the only reason he parked it.In the 40's and 50's in central Illinois probably 40% of the farm tractors were propane powered. The use of them waned when manufacturers started building good diesels.

It does have it's plus's and minus's.

You do get less power and unless you have all the refueling stations scoped out it could be hard to find.

I do know where I can get it easily and is cheap enough to make the less mileage about a wash.

The good part is that if you don't drive the vehicle for a long time the fuel never goes bad and the plugs last for ever etc....

I think it'll work pretty good.

My 292 is rebuilt with a little higher compression than normal so I'll be able to take advantage a little more timing advance when running it...

The other advantage is that when CNG becomes more and more available I can switch to CNG by changing the tank and regulator.

The Impco mixing valves are compatible with just about any combustible gas.

I use propane to heat with, home and shop, it cost almost as much as gas around here. Looking at a bill right now, $3.29 a gal. It would take a lot of driving to break even on the cost unless it is a lot cheaper in your area.

It's about $2.50 around here.

I don't expect it to pay for itself as it were......(the truck will never "pay" for itself)

I only spent $240 for the whole system.....so the initial cost is nominal...
