Sometimes cheap isnt so cheap, especially when everthing needs be redone again a few thousand miles later.  Sorry but I am pessimistic.  You might ask qiestions like what pistons are used, are they all the same size, have the rod end been resized and rebushed, range of installed spring heights, what is the main and rod bearing tolerances, head Id, new or reground camshaft and lifters, new or stock valve springs, and so on.  There are many ways of shortchanging a buyer.

Today I went in to the shop to pick up a set of rods I bought on ebay.  they looked good, clean, apparently new bushings and resized big ends.  The shop was to verify the bushing fitting and big end size.  Neither were right.   The rods are basically cores.  These or worse could be in that rebuilt motor you are considering.  The shop owner told me that more often than not when he checks resized rods they are not correct.  In my case there was a .001 taper from center to outside, and bushings had not been replaced but only had a hone run through them to look like it.

Kind of posted a similar question about the same machine shop in spokane wash. I think the name  is S&S Rebuilt auto engines. There are a few different internet links to the same machine shop. 7yr/70k or from the site you saw 7yr/100k(hyperformance). They(after speaking with on phone) do allow many custom upgrades but it seems the basic price is for oem specs or better.

above is link to basic rebuild. I'm looking at shipping these guys my 292. Is there any reason i should not. A local rebuild will cost me $600 more for what seems to be the same thing but my local machinist is not giving me a warranty like this. (1 yr maybe)

seems these guys cover it all. what do you think? thanks bb

You said ship it to Washington. What part of the country are you in? Gerry

Charleston SC Rebuild and round trip ship is $1850. $2400 for a local machinist with not much warranty.
By 55Birdman - 17 Years Ago
If you send it out of town you have NO idea what they did to it inside. It could be guaranteed for life and I would be still worried about it. Go to the local Ford dealership and ask them for a good mechanic.

yeah, it's perdy expensive..i mean heck, from ford-y-block.com a rebuild kit is like the same price as buyin it from the guys in washington..it would make sense..if they buy in bulk etc etc, of course it would be cheaper for them...but..i wonder if they're just re-ringing or what-not...being i'm not gonna be riding her hard..i mean..come-on, only be like 220bhp..lol.... i just love the sound...at the same time, if i get someone to rebuild mine..it's #s matchin ;-)...

then again...you are right...you don't know what they put in it, unless i disassmbel it all..and what's the pint in that right..lol

actually it's a 2 year warranty where they'll replace it...the next 5 years they'll sell u another at 1/2 price so....i'm really considering it....
By charliemccraney - 17 Years Ago
I would get it done locally to avoid any hassle with long distance shipping.  I'll bet replacement requires that you cover shipping both ways.  That right there is probably $1000.00.  Plus it's always good to keep the local guy in business.

What does the fine print say?

so anyone know a good site to get all the parts need for a stock rebuild...... what about porting/polishing heads??? what good will that do? what about est prices?
By Tom Compton - 17 Years Ago
Alabama being a lot closer to SC than Washington, I would at least look at Glen Henderson's post in Classifieds section and contact him about rebuilders w/ Y experience who are a lot closer than WA.

There are engine rebuild kits on ebay for about $900.00 from a place in Fla.I would buy the parts from a place you are comfortable with and do it myself. Just because you will know whats been done to it and it will be fun to do it. Speedway motors sells Y block stuff. Mummert has class stuff so you wont go wrong with him . But if price is an issue go to ebay. Find out the Mfg. names for the products and look them up to see if they are worthwhile. If the are then buy from them. I bought a set of lifters, cambearings and isky cam from the Fla. store . Good stuff for my use. Name of the site is Falcon stores. search for Y block rebuild kits and you will get there. Where in Sc are you ? I am in NC.

John Mummert's site is in the links section

Also I recently saw this on ebay. Found it very interesting…seems pricey but I know what it cost to get horsepower and a turnkey job. Also I looked at the other engines he has available, which seem like a pretty legit array of FORD's best. Another option or food for thought. BTW i'm not endorsing this or promoting this guy.

Another possible parts source is Schumann's Sales in Blue Grass IA 52726. Ph#563-381-2416. They occasionally advertise in Y-Block magazine, as having extensive Y-block engine parts. Recently they advertised as having the 1957 "D" code, 256 deg advertised, Cam available.

hmmm, you're right? try this.

But did I miss something? about Y-Blocks, looks like all FE engines??

Grog, I like your Long Roof, I have a '55 myself.
By mctim64 - 17 Years Ago
When you go to Pops sight, just do a serch for "Y-Block" and you will see a 338ci stroker 312.

Thanks Tim for the search tip.  Was having trouble myself in locating it.  Here’s the link.

I would really like to buy one of these just to take it apart to see what kind of work has been done and what kind of parts they use, I can't see a great rebuild being done for that kind of money. Maybe OK though.

you talkin about the pops 10k job you'd liek to disassemble or teh lil 1.5k job???

i was under the impression 10k would get you one hell of a motor no??? maybe i'm young and dumb...

i woudl tend to agree if u mean the $1,500 though?
By charliemccraney - 17 Years Ago
10k will buy a very strong Y. They don't give enough info on the ebay ad to make me want to jump at it, though. I would certainly contact them first to get more specific details.
By mctim64 - 17 Years Ago
Yes, I was talking about the $1500 job. Although I would like to see what you get for 10K, I think any one of us could do the same for a little more than half of that.

Tim

usually a good 6k will get yeah a great motor..if it was a custom 500hp supercharged/turbo'd 338..i could see it ;-)
