On my 1955 ford the vacume motor for the wipers does not work where can I get a rebuild kit for it. The motor is the one under the dash thanks.

Get an electric wiper conversion kit .You will be glad you did.Check any parts supplier Macs,CASCO, Larrys Mustang and Thunderbird among others.

It is possible to rebuild the wiper motor. It can be exchanged also thru various suppliers in Hemmings.

It will work adequately but is difficult to measure up to today's standards, like most old stuff.

BTW it is just a simple pump with leather seals, I have reworked them myself successfully with disassembly and a little grease.

Smile)you mean use the same seals but just put a little grease where they ride in the motor? and how do you ever remove the motor thanks

Smilei finally got it out with some difficulty a few of the screws that hold it together are hard to get with a wrench how are you supposed to remove them thanks

Tim,

Re-builders have the special tool for easy screw removal. It CAN be done with needle-nose pliers, but not easily. If your car is still 6 volts by the way, you can forget about electric wipers.

I rebuilt my vacuum motor OK by cobbling together parts/gaskets from several others, and using up the entire local supply of silicone distributor grease. Never again!

Just bite the bullet, cough up the $75 and get a rebuilt one from someone (Ficken?) who has all the NOS parts/tools, as not all cores can be rebuilt successfully, and many times the plastic parts are shot. Vacuum wipers also have the advantage of variable speed control.

Find a small piece of copper or steel tubing that just fits over the head of the special screws. Then crimp the sides in to fit the flat spots. That should do the trick. Chuck in NH

SmileI got it apart thanks to your help so how much grease should i put in there and what kind regular lube grease?

Vaseline would probably work.

As for electric conversions, the jury is out on them. Mine from Vintique failed twice & I've heard of problems with some others. It's been suggested that some units are originally designed as Boat wipers & often as single wiper units. So using them with double wipers, results in overloading.. Buyer beware!

I bought mine from a TBird place in Nevada 7-8 years ago. It fit exactly into the vacuum wiper attach points. Paid 99.00 for it. Works great (well the only time I used it it worked great). I have had my car in the rain 2 times in about 18 years. I turn them on every once in a while to make sure they still work.

SmileWell I put a little vasaline in it and put it together and it did not work so where can I send it to be rebuilt?

I used to see ads in Hemmings Motor News for rebuilding you might check with them online first.

Hello  Timmy,I just did a google search.Wiperman.com is $99.00 plus $8.00 shipping. He  also advertises in Hemmings. You might try the same search. There were 2 more I think.

In case you don’t go the vacuum wiper motor rebuild route, the two speed electric wiper motor conversion for my ’55 Customline was originally purchased from Dennis Carpenter in 1991 and is still working strong today.  I did have to modify the arms early on to get a longer travel across the windshield.  And there’s always the chance that what’s being sold today is not the same unit though.

Ted,

Do you remember what modifications you made to the arms. I have the same problem with short sweep. I had wondered about making the eccentric longer to make the arms travel further. Not sure of my geometry on that one though. Chuck in NH

The prices they are getting for rebuilding are crazy. Some want between 85.00 to 99.00. I would do it myself if I could find out where to get the rebuild kit

Chuck,  I modified the “J” lever (probably what you're calling the eccentric) that attaches to the wiper motor.  Best I recall, I increased the short part of the J lever about ¼” while I increased the longer part of the lever about ½”.  This made both pivot points for the attaching arms about ¼” further out than originally supplied.  Both long arms going to the wipers themselves were shortened about ¼” to compensate for the lengthening of the “J” lever.  Hope that helps.

I am making the top gasket and where the motor shaft goes through is the gasket supposed to be split there 2 pieces or does it overlap and supposed to fit over the shaft thanks Well I am trying it as a split gasket and i am putting it together and can't figure out how the shaft tripps the plastic piece on top. I put the spring on which holds the piece that fits in a knotch on another plastic piece but I have a piece of metal that has a slight hook on one end and has a slit in the middle. I can't figure out where that goes.
By timmy4 - 17 Years Ago
SmileIn orther words how does the plastic piece lock in to the shaft that moves back and forth

I don't have a current copy of Hemmings on hand, but there used to be a couple of advertisers out of Washington state that rebuilt vacuum wipers for well under $99 including return and insurance. You might want to check again..

Thank you I can't see the number on the motor what is the right number for a 1955 ford custom line vacuum motor thanks
