If any of you have experience with Buicks Nailhead 322 can you PM me I need some advice for a issue we have with one.

An excellent book covering the Buick engines is the SA Performance How-To manual titled “How to Build Max-Performance Buick Engines”.  This book covers the Nail Heads in detail although I was given the book to read up on early 455 block oiling issues.  The book is SA146 written by Jefferson Bryant and put out by Car Tech with an ISBN number of ISBN-13 978-1-932494-59-4.  It’s a 2008 publication so it’s not out there on the used book shelves yet.  That may be enough information to hunt down the book on the various book web sites or order it at the local book store.

Thanlks Ted, I found the problem, one of the cam shaft lifter oil gallery welch plugs had blown out and luckily did not get caught in the timing set, replaced both plugs with genuine length ones and staked them in and shes a beauty, nearly half as good as a Y block now, Henry Ford would have put threaded plugs both front and rear not just in the rear like Buick had done...

I feel your pain.  I had a 406 FE in the early Seventies with the pressed in plugs and the one in the back of the back of the block pushed out subsequently filling up the Lakewood scattershield up to the vents with engine oil.  Every engine since then has had the pushed in plugs replaced with screw in plugs.  The Y engine is in a unique class as it's one of the few engines produced with all screw in oil galley plugs.  Even the Flattie had some pressed in plugs and they are known to be problematic if not properly dealt with.

     There's an excellent site dedicated to Buicks of all stripes, V6's,  nail heads, aluminum V8's and so on. V8Buick.com. Those guys are almost as nuts as we are! They have a section decoted to the pure stockers, which is always fun to read.

Frank you are 100% right I found that web site admitted straight up in my biography I was a Ford Guy who dabbles in anything US unbiased and hey presto they wree only to willing to help, they are a great bunch of guys very much like the folk on here I had the answer in a very short while.

hey frank  not all of us are nuts i for one am quite sane i just love my engine its not my fault that when i had it out to change the crank i wanted to put it in bed  with helen & i to keep it warm & cosy its 50 years old why should it get cold  ive even tried the ute as well but its too big for the bed.
