head gasket sealant

i was reading up on installing heads on my 312.

manual stated to use some gasket sealant and to spread it over the whole gasket surface.

what sealant do you use?

my gaskets are Fel Pro 7999. old stock units. they do not have teflon, silicone sealing beads on them.

old school metal job.

I all the old HRH tech advice articles I remember, silver paint worked best for OEM type steel gaskets (if head/block milled level).

how bout Gasgacinch or maybe some light silicone around the water outlet holes?

Your question about head gasket sealer. If you have metal head gaskets then in the old days we used permatex copperseal or rattle can aluminum paint. This will seal IF the surfaces are true. Mine have held up more years than I care to admit. If you use composite gaskets NO SEALER. Pete

Silver paint, or better stated aluminum paint is supposed to be the best.  Coppercoat/copperseal certainly will seal too, but good luck if you ever have to take the heads off later.  They can get so "stuck" that you may need a lift to get them off.

We used to use alum paint back in my dealership days, but I am sure that over the years paint formula has changed. I am not sure that the stuff that we have today would work, K&W copperkote or permatex would be my choice if I had to use the metal head gaskets. My question is why use them, by all accounts the modern composit gaskets are more dependable. Sure you loose a little in compression ratio, but may not be to much if your heads have been milled.

why use em?

cuz i got em super cheap and i don't want to spend a ton of cash on this engine.

i don't have a car for it. it's just a tinkering item right now.

but tons of fun along the way. would love to get it fired up.

K&W copperkote is always my choice on stamped steel head gaskets. Just my opinion, but I prefer steel gaskets to comp. ones. Yes you don't lose compression, but also if you install them on fresh surfaces and re-torque them properly they last forever and very hard to blow.

Don't get me wrong, I think FelPro makes a fine composite gasket and you get more fudge factor.Wink
