I thought the engine guys would get a kick out of this, I know I did. A 91 year old gentelman came into our shop last week and wanted to know if we could bore an engine for him, I said "Yes, what kind of engine?" Well here is what he brought in. It's a 1902 Rambler, single cylinder OHV, 5" bore 6" stroke (117ci is what I came up with) He said it was hard to start and needed to have a new oversize piston. We didn't have one on the shelf, and Egge couldn't make one with the correct comp. hieght, it's probably only 4:1 as it is. So it gets a sleeve and a new set of rings. Here are some pictures, check out the rod cap. Notice I put a Y-Block in the pictures so I'm not totaly off subject.

PF Arcand (11/28/2008) Tim: Did anyone ask about the car it goes in?I haven't seen the car yet, but the old guy said I could come look at it when he gets it back together. I imagine it is something like a "Curved Dash Olds" he did say it has a tiller bar instead of a steering wheel. When I do go see the car I will take pictures and post them.

OK Guys, I have a picture of the car. It was brought to Me by the old Man, I hope to go see the car in person and take better pictures and some video to post on YouTube.
You can see the crank just below the seat, that's the starter.

I think this has happened to all of us... as a young man we all were keen on new cars, then we got a little more age and focused to a bit older cars and used those as a daily drivers and now after few years, fresh cars just don't get our attention . Every old thing is interesting ( exept old ladies ) and is worth atleast a thought . BTW... How long is that rod?

Every old thing is interesting ( exept old ladies ) and is worth at least a thought . BTW... How long is that rod? Seppo, You'll eventually find that some old ladies can be very interesting! Some of them can actually hold an intelligent conversation also.

Ashley Force, Shirley Muldowney. Danica Patrick. I could talk, or listen to those ladies. Forget the actresses, you can usually see right through from one ear to the other, although I could listen to Olivia(Newton-John) for a while.

BTW... How long is that rod? It's a good 12" center to center and had a bit of a bend to it, but I don't think we could find a new one and I would hate to break it trying to straiten it.

Come on guys... Ashley and Danica are a whole lot younger than me . As Frank mentioned, reeeally old ladies have something to say, that's true, if they still remember what they was just thinking... . Well, I would rather have some conversation with Melanie Troxell or Hillary Will ...12" ... wow... almost twice as long as we are used to

OK, here's the update. First of all I asked him about the coupe in the back ground and he did not remember it. Picture was taken in 2000 and he is 93. I went out to his place this morning thinking he was going to fire up this old car and drive it around for us, Kathy and I, but when we got there he had the body off and was having a bit of a time with it. Said it had great compression but wouldn't fire and keep running. I had a look and his cam timing was off, so after loosening the lock nut on the cam and bringing the crank around so the piston was at TDC I put the cam in the middle between the rockers, overlap, and tightened the lock nut. This put it in time and after cranking for a while it hit a few times but would not take off and run. I wanted to have some good video to post on YouTube to show but not this time, I am going back in two weeks and we should get it running then. Here are a few pictures of the car with the body off.
This is the crankcase, the horizontal shaft below is what drives the cam. the next picture shows the timing gears.

This is the cylinder head. In the lower left corner and the picture below you can see the cam and rockers.
It's got roller rockers!
This is Jack, he's 93 and he still loves to play with his toys including an A36 Bonanza which he still flys out of his drivway. Below is the body for this car and some of his other playthings.
