I just received my Jan. 09 issue of Hemmings Muscle Machines in the mail.  There is a 6 page article on a beautiful restored Black 57 Custom Tudor, E Code.  Some nice pics and interesting info.  If your looking for it at a store, the cover says AIR GRABBER, and has a blue 72 Plymouth Road Runner.  The article mentions that they think about 600 E Code engines were put in T-Birds and passenger cars.  The car is in NC.

Three weeks ago I was "exercising" the green machine around the nieghborhood - and got chased down at a stop sign by a guy on a bike. Who then said - "I didn't know there were any other birds in the neighborhood besides mine" (?). So I had to follow him home and look - at the most decrepit "left out inthe desert too long" E-code '57 I've seen (in fact the only one). But indoors now, no rust - plastic roof is suffering. It has been disabled since '78 when the replacement engine died. Original short block was in the corner under a blanket. Per the current owner - who inherited it from his dad (original owner) at age 14 - it had every available option except the dealer installed air conditioning. There is also a dry-rot infested convertable top and toneau cover.

The single teapot is an amazing device  - but two in a row is hard to imagine ......how do you guys tune those things anyway? One of 600 - hard to imagine.

I thought there were many more E code birds produced -more than 1500 or so I've heard. Guess it depends if you're buying or selling. BigGrin

Anyway-Just the same I wouldn't mind having one, no matter how the heck many they made.

Even with two teapots! I agree Steve, I've had ONE for a long time and that was enough. Affectionatly known as the towering inferno.

I had heard 1500 combined too, but I don't think anyone knows for sure.  I didn't see the other posting about this article until after I posted mine :-) . I was around in 57 and bought a new 57 convert, D Code, and I didn't see very many E or F code cars around the Chicago area or at the drag strips in Northern IL, WI and Indiana.  Notable exception was George Chaltins F Code Skyliner.  I did see a two tone green Fairlane 4 door F Code at a dealership in Oak Park, IL.

For the last few years of the 50's,The undisputed drag racing champ of Ford County Illinois was Mike Newman and his black 57 E Bird.

Speculation is around 5000 total setups were produced.That also includes the spare parts that were stocked and sold by all of the dealers.
