Located a y-block starter (I am told) for our project engine. Are they all interchangeable or do I need to look for a certain one? We are using a 272 block, what about the bellhousing (we dont have a trans yet but are supposed to be getting one from the same place as the starter, no idea if they came from the same vehicle, probably not) I imagine before I can determine this I will need a trans and bellhousing to if they mate up?? Any tips or tricks to improving the starter or do they work as best they can with just a standard rebuild? Thanks-

Easiest way to spin a Yblock is to find a 6 Volt starter used on 12 volts! Used to run my bird this way for years, other than that a standard starter should be adequate without any tricks done to it.

Dan if you are putting a C/4 in with the adaptor--  the starter drive is different and has to be changed accordingly.           Flat-o-matic are great to deal with and answer questions.  Dan  Thanks for helping the kids!!

All Y-Block and FE starters up through 1964 are essentially the same except for the voltage requirements.  You’ll have to watch out for the 6 volt units though (1954 & 1955) if you have a 12 volt system.  Likewise, if you are still 6 volt, then you’ll definitely want a 6 volt starter.  Although you can use a 6 volt starter on a 12 volt system (spins like crazy), the bendix will take a beating and eventually fail (shatter is probably a better word) from engaging much harder.  Sure does start good with a 6 volt starter on a 12 volt system though.

 

But as Eddie mentions, if you’re using a non-stock flywheel, then use the starter recommended for that particular flywheel.
