Has anyone here put an underdash AC in a 56 Fairlane, or similiar model for that matter? I was wondering about the best route for the hoses, whether or not bulkhead fittings were used, that sort of thing. Unit came from brother in law's 66 Mustang and has a Sanden SD-508 compressor. Any tips much appreciated. Thanks

I did an under dash installation in my 56 club sedan. I used a "Vintage Air" www.vintageair.com bracket that puts the Sanden under the Alternator about in the position of the old generator. You will need a new rear manifold plate on the Compressor so the inlet and outlet are straight out the rear of the compressor and located above the center line of the compressor. Any Sanden AC dist ( Ap Air ) can get this manifold plate for you. You will then need fittings that turn down and away from the starter. Any AC hose supplier ( AP Air) can supply these.
I used bulk head fittings to go through the radiator support area under the battery box. I then placed the dryer on the inside fender well behind the battery. I also used bulk head fittings through the fire wall close to the hinge area. It's a tight fit in this area tough to tighten the inside fittings.
I used a one wire GM alternator from Speedway motors Chrome Plated for about $100.
You will need to find a narrow 57 up crank balancer with narrow pulley and a narrow pulley for the water pump, again from later model Y-Blocks.
Not a tough job and the unit you have will cool the car. Just get a condenser to mount out front of the radiator support and you are in business. Use R134A freon and be sure to oil the unit. wwwapairinc.com can supply the fittings hose and manifold. Talk to Brian and he will help you out.
Good Luck!

I installed on in my 55 bird. I bought it from Southern Rods N Parts. It is a combo heat and A/C unit. its under dash . I ran the hoses along fender on passenger side and put firewall coupling on and connected the hoses to it and it works fine.
