Project is coming along nicely, been having good luck finding stuff we need. I know it'd be quicker to buy all this at once from a manufacturer/supplier but I am finding some good deals buying stuff individually...Just got a brand new set of NOS Federal Mogul main bearings from this guy... Tinkers Motor Supply (214) 688-1067 He said he had a number of Y-Block bearings on hand. Anyhow here is a list of things we still need: cam bearings std. con rod bearings 292 piston rings std. water pump rebuild kit - bought a reman oil pump rebuild kit dist. rebuild (cap, rotor, points, condensor etc.) - pending carb rebuild kit (Autolite ???) 2bbl head bolts - got 'em dist holdown - got 'em gasket kit - have pieced together most everything, need to double check pulley for crank, fan and fan (engine has no power accesories) fuel pump and eccentric - pending Thanks!

Dan, Try eBay for the gaskets and cam bearings, I have found the there for $50 and $20 respectively. You may find other parts too. I have a set of head bolts set aside for you, just waiting to see if I had anything elase you need.

Cool, thanks! I think that everything I need is in the above list. Been checking the ebay stuff, that is about the best price I've found on the oil pump rebuild. RockAuto.com is about $50 cheaper than Napa on a gasket set so I think I'll go there for that, thanks again for all the help!!

Dan, Hold off on buying the gasket set, I have a bunch of misc. gasket including heads. It may not be complete but if you don't mind making a couple it should do the job. I'll get them together and send next week with the head bolts.

Dan, I have a rebuilt '57 distributor with points, condenser and cap I don't need as I have chosen a new direction. Purchased from Auto Zone recently. I don't have the intermediate shaft to drive the oil pump, but I am sure you can find one. If you are interested let me know and I will send it to you.

Dan: If someone above doesn't come through, I can send a fuel pump eccentric and the rest of the parts for the front of the cam, and a distributor hold down, also valley cover bolts. Let me know.

I will absolutely video and photo as much as I can. Our hope is to have it installed in the T this spring. We have a big parade and a vo-tech show at school in May and would like to have the T and the '46 in it for the kids (granted they may both be on trailers ) Columbus I am assuming is in the summer, cant make that as I fight fires in the summer... Tim, does the cam you gave us match the p/n on the box? If not, do you know the specs? Thanks-

Dan: Even though I'm too slow to offer parts before others already have them on the way, I am still glad to see you teaching the young folks the ways of auto mechanics, and especially those "antique" Y Blocks. If I can be of any help with parts, let me know. Helping the youngsters learn by doing would be reward enough. Even the local trade schools don't teach them to be mechanics, they teach them to be parts replacers.

Dan (1/21/2009) Tim, does the cam you gave us match the p/n on the box? If not, do you know the specs? Thanks- Dan, that is not the box for that cam, I'm sorry but I don't have exact specs on that cam. Since it was not one that I ordered all I have on it are the "vague" specs. Lift is supposed to be around .450" with 1.5:1 rockers (the Y has 1.43 or 1.54 ratio) and duration is listed as 278* I know you would like to have the lobe center to degree it but I don't have that spec. listed. This is a single profile cam so the intake and exhaust should be the same, check the forth lobe back (#1 intake) and look for around 106-108*. I assume you did not invest in a multiple key-way timing set, so if you want to make a change an offset key would have to do. You can make one with a little creative filing out of a scrub key.

Dan (1/22/2009) I'll probably install it straight up...Dan. I hate to be a stickler for details but when you say “install straight up” I’m assuming you’re still degreeing in the cam. Simply counting the chain links is no guarantee that the camshaft is installed at the actual “straight up” position. This is typically determined using a degree wheel and dial indicator to determine exactly where the cam is phased and then adjust accordingly. If not degreeing it in, then the camshaft is simply being installed, not being installed straight up.

Ted, we do intend to use a degree wheel and indicator when installing the cam. Thanks for the interest in our project! On a side note, I grew tired of trying to find a rebuild kit for the water pump so I ordered a re-maned one from Rockauto.com. It looks to be decent quality, the price was great and the shipping was SUPER fast. You guys may want to check them out for parts - so far so good in my experience...
