I am in the the process of tearing down a 272 from a 57 Ford. I have the heads off with no promblems but can not bust the bolt loose that holds the balancer on.

Any sugestions before I get out the 6 foot pipe to put over the breaker bar?  Maybe heat it up with the torch?

If the engine is out of the car you could use an impack wrench. If it is in the car you could use a socket and braker bar on the frame and bump the starter.

The 272 is on the engine stand.  It has never been apart and has been sitting underneath a work bench for 30+ years. I bought this from a guy that took it out of his 57 Ford in the early 70's. The motor turns freely but that crankshaft bolt is froze. I would post a picture but can not figure out how to do it.

Rich I would use an air impack wrench or put 2 bolts in the crank shaft on the flywheel side and wedge a bar against the engine stand and unloosen the bolt with a long braker bar and socket

I think an impact wrench is your only option. Since it is on a stand be careful, with a cheater bar, you'll roll it over.Hehe

Just a thought. If you have the pan off which I am sure you do or will, can you not lock the crank from turning with a block of wood and then use long bar on ratchet handle to break it loose?Just my 2-cents input.

You are turning counter clockwise looking at the engine from the front aren't you?

You are using a deruster - PB blaster, Gibbs or Kroil????

After soaking the Dampner bolt with the PB Blaster all weekend and using a friends impack which was stronger than mine we were able to get that bolt off and pull the balancer.

Talk about Ford tuff!  Then again that bolt was on for 52 years at 120lbs or so of torque.

Thanks for all advice

Regarding Balancer Questions, the engine is in the truck. I had to remove the front motor mount to swap it out. As long as I was in there, I raised the front of the engine just enough to drop the motor mount to frame bracket. The bracket would not come loose without pulling the dampner out a little under two inches. This allowed the mount to engine block drop out from between the dampner and the block. My question is, can I pull the dampner the rest of the way off without creating any more work for myself? I just want to clean up the front of the engine, paint some parts, and put it back like it was. Its running fine, other than someone installed the motor mount upside down, wrong bolts (too small) and put the bolts in upside down too. This is a YBlock

I don't see why not. You're half way there, anyway. A balancer installer will be a good tool to acquire if you don't already have one.

Charlie, ok its off. When you suggested a harmonic balancer installer, did you mean something to pull it or is there really a tool that will install it?  I am not sure how to get it back on correctly. I was just going to clean everything up, lube it, line it up with the key on the end of the crank and tap it on squarely until the threads on the bolt will reach the hole to pull it the rest of the way in.  Is there a tool that will do a better job?

If it doesn't do a better job, it's definitely an easier job.

I think it can be purchased at Summit Racing. I'd look it up now but I need to get to sleep.

There are tools specifically designed for installing the damper.  For the Y, the 9/16 X 18 threads in the Y crankshaft snout just means you’ll have to search a little harder for the right tool unless you work up your own.  Here’s a pic of the tool I modified to install dampers on the Y.

Local "old school" mechanic used "50s" tools to install MY new dampner (sledge hammer & wood block). It soon failed.

Buy the threaded tool (it's cheaper than balancer rebuilding), apply a piece of masking tape between dampner and front cover and watch it slacken so you can be sure crank threads are not being stripped.

Here you go.

This looks just like the one I have. Mine came from Eastwood. Some of the fancier kits may work as well. They just don't get specific on the adapter thread sizes.
