after pulling the heads (ECG-D, 1955 heads) off my 272, I noticed that there appear to be fewer openings in the gaskets than there are water passage openings in the heads...

am I nuts??

the gaskets were on correctly ("front" marking to the front, and right side up, just like the book says), but there are some holes in the gaskets that are much smaller than the openings in the head for water passages, and some holes appear to be missing completly from the gasket, like they are made that way on purpose to restrict the flow of water...

do I need to add some holes and enlarge others so that all the water passages match up with a same size hole in the gaskets...?

seems like this may have caused my engine to get hot too quickly upon first start up after the rebuild...

thanks,Mark

The holes are smaller to restrict coolant flow, you want most of it to go to the back of the block before entering the head and returning to the front to reenter the radiator. This is why you want the big openings in the gasket at the back of the block.
