NASCAR these days

Several of my Yblock friends do not "like" NASCAR but I still prefer to see the Fords win.  On a cold weekend with all the cars and tools ice cold there are worse things to do than watch the tube and see a Ford win and Dale Jr wipe out 10 cars.  He and especially his dad epitomize what is wrong with scrubs to me.

I got an idea.  Why don't we create a form of racing where a car is purchased from the dealership, maybe it's stripped down a ittle to make it lighter and the motor is tweaked a little.  We can call it stock car racing!  This way, all of the spectators can associate with the cars on the track; they see them in their neighbors driveway.

Thats how Nascar started. Problem was as the cars got faster people got killed. Imagine how long Kyle Bush would last in a 150 mph 427 '63 Galaxie with no roll cage, or safety equipment. I don't think you can go back.

I know. I just think they need to change the name if they are not, in fact, racing stock cars. They are not even remotely stock. I wonder if anything on those cars is found on any of the cars you can buy at the dealership. Does Ford even have a pushrod engine anymore?

Up until this (last) fall they had the 3.0 Vulcan in the Ranger. But I just picked up a Brochure and it's gone. All that's left is the Twin cam four and the single cam 4.0 v6's. So no, there no more Ford pushrod engines, except the diesel, which is a Navistar anyhow.

By the way, Dougie, I was rootin' for Bill Elliot in the Woods Brothers Ford. What a story that would have been!w00t

Actually, I don't think the advertising does call them "STOCK" cars anymore, just "NASCAR racing. could be wrong.

And I agree they aren't, of course.

BUt they do ALL have FORD 9" rearends so I've been told. All the same kind of frames, etc, etc. blah, blah, blah.

But I still end up watching it - and I'm not being sarcastic here - it's great to take a nap somewhere in the middle and wake up to see the finish. HA

Yeh Bill Elliott and the Woods Bros would have been a real story but really any Ford is OK with me.  There were 8 Fords and 15 scrubs in the race.  5 of the Fords were Roush Fenway.

I would like to know more about the technology of the whole car,  For example I don't think the rear axle is still a 9" because the the high offset causes more power loss than other axles, but I don't know for sure. 2 hp per cubic inch @ 10,000RPM with 2 valves per cyl and push rods is damn impressive no matter what.

Also it p_sses me off that the local paper had an article from AP about how Kenseth wasn't enough of a draw for the track in California next Sunday.  Of course if Junior had won it would only slightly short of the second coming.

As Al says, in front of the TV is a good place for nap but I really did like to listen to NASCAR on the radio. still it is about the only continuing exposure auto racing gets and inspite of the minipulation of the classes and cautions etc it still produces more excitement, especially when a Ford beats a scrub, than any other racing venue.

I think the "make'em all just alike" scheme of equalizing the competition has had an unexpected ill effect on the "sport". It has created the same thing we see every week during the whole season - pack racing - a sort of 500 mile morning freeway drive. It turns out to prove that within a group of about 20 or 25 - even the drivers are just about  as equal as the cars. I personally don't have any ill will for Matt Kenseth or any of the others (I'm also an old time Bill and Ernie Elliot fan) - but pack racing, keeping them all within a quarter mile of each other on the lead lap, by making all of the cars just alike.......is boring as all get out. And its asking for the usual "big one" freeway accident - tailgating at its finest. What's the Petty line? "I'd rather be lucky than good".......he's right.

I have decided the only way to get this strung out properly - is to let'em cheat - it'll get all those creative juices flowing again! Let'em get their tires from different manufacturers - put a can of "juice" in the fuel can - I don't care what it is - put a funky spring or shock package on there - maybe it would be best if it was a "claimer" style of racing if they want to limit the engine cost - who knows. I know one thing - one day all of the just alike pack races are going to burn out the viewing audience.

Doug.....They do still use what is basically the Ford 9 inch design.Of  course it's a better built than Ford ever built them, but they still look the same.My son works for Roush and you wouldn't believe how many rear end sets they have laying around. It's about the last remnant of the true stock car.Pre-COT cars still had to have the factory roof, but now that's gone.

Good to see Awesome Bill in a red Ford again. Now if he could just get the number 9 back,it would look  like the days when Nascar was about racing.

I grew up watching nascar starting in the early 60's. I quit watching last year because it is not stock car racing, but a highly manipulated and controlled "spectacle".there was a time when drivers had to pay their dues and it took a long time to become one of the elite. now days, the "elite" are pretty boys that are appealing to the young fans. in all the years I watched stockcar racing, dale earnhardt was the dirtiest driver.and it is beyond me why he is held in such high regard! alan kulwicki and davy allison were truley great drivers but you don't see them elevated to god like status like mr #3. I don't fault anyone for enjoying sunday afternoon nascar on tv,but for me I don't need the stress of the B.S. that goes with it. thank you for letting me vent a little.

They have, in fact "dumbed it down" so the Soccer moms and the rest of the crowd can understand it. Actually most of the fans wouldn't know the difference between a pushrod and a connecting rod, but they pay money to attend. That's what keeps it going for all of us. If they only allowed people in the stands who could actually understand the technology involved, there'd only be six spectators at Daytona. They had to make it about the drivers to increase interest. No point in knocking it, it's working. I always get a chuckle out of the open wheel and Formula one types who knock it because there's "no real Technology" involved. Really? How about showing me how YOU can build a carburated pushrod 358 " motor that makes 850 hp, turns 9700 rpm for five hundred miles plus qualifying and practice. Nothin to it right?

That is the one thing I truly respect about NASCAR.

I, too, am disgusted with NASCAR, but havin' said that, I watch it every weekend. I watch the truck race, which I think is the best of the bunch, in fact I'm goin' to Atlanta next weekend to the truck race, I like the Nationwide race and I like the cup race. The cars are "NAS-CAR"s. The scrubs have a front distributor, the Toyota motor looks like a Dodge, in fact the front of it sort of looks like a Y-motor. The Ford, until this new one looked like a Cleveland Ford. I don't know the factory involvement of any of them anymore, 'cept I think Toyota has put a ton of resources in it. I used to be for a make, now I'm more for a driver. It's sad. I'd rather see Kevin Harvic win in a scrub than Vickers in a Ford. I'd rather see Carl Edwards win in anything than most of them in a Ford. Like another poster said, Little "E" winning would be to most like Obama winning. I think people would faint! Un-like most, I like Kyle Bush and the crowd boo's like crazy when they introduce him. They go nuts when they introduce Jr. But all in all, as bad as I hate it, I love it!

What the heck happened today?  4 Roush engines blew.  Incidentally, Gapp and Roush used to run occasionally at my local dragstrip with their pro stockers years ago.  Yep, same Roush.

One of them apparently slung a rod out the side of the block. They said there was a hole in the block.

And remember Roush was involved in road racin' long before he got into NASCAR. He ran a Cougar with a 4 cylinder that just was a real bad ass ....

Montana Ford Man, that is exactly how I felt for years now. You said it all---right to a "T"     Thanks, Mike.

Ej,

Think you may have that Backasswords. The Drag racing was first with Gapp & Roush Running pro Stock along with Jenkins etc. Back in the 70's. I think Jack actually started before that, but that's the first anyone heard of him. The Road racing came along late 70's or so.
