I have a 59 Edsel 292 with the Ford 2100 Carb. Idle is good, but almost stalls then "catches" when accelerating from a dead stop or when I flip the throttle at idle. Fuel lines, filters etc. clear. Carb cleaned, but not rebuilt. Where should I start? Thanks Ed

I may be off in left field, but check the spring on your bell crank mechanism. When I first got my 56, It had a major lag off the line. I imediatley thought there was a problem with the carb. As it turns out, the spring was worn out on the bell crank of the throttle linkage. I would have to have the throttle almost half way down before it actually stated to open the butterflies on the carb. I believe there was an article on this in Y-Block mag a while back. As soon as I get my butt in gear, I'm relacing all that junk with a Locar cable set up. Rob

Another thing to look at would be the timing. At idle around 700 rpms with the vacuum advance disconnected set the timing in the 10 to 12 degree area and like john said make sure the accelerator pump is working and that the squirter or discharge nozzles not stopped up.Robs idea on the linkage is good as well,hopefully this will get you going.

Thanks guys. It all sounds right. I'll replace the pump diaphram and check the timing. I can't tell if the basic rebuild kits from MAC's come with a new diaphram. Does anybody know? Of course I will call them. I guess there are enough parts to do a quick rebuild. Needle valves look good, but if I told you I could crank them down all the way and the engine still runs what would you say? Car is drivable, just not much fun to "nurse" it off the line. Ed

You should start by looking down the carburator WITH THE ENGINE OFF as you open the throttle and check for a stream of gas from the squirters on the venturies of your carb. A good squirt. If not then your accelerator pump is bad.

Ed,one more thing of which should be on the check list is to make sure that as soon as the throttle shaft moves the slightest bit, you should see gas starting to come out the squirters.If there is a lag, that could cause a hesitation or stall upon acceleration.Check by moving the shaft slightly by hand and looking down at the squirters.Adjust accordingly.
