I still own and drive 2 other y blocks, but I now have a 5.o HO in a 56 Ranch Wagon. The fuel pump mounted right near the tank with a filter in between. I always hear the pump wining. My question is would it be possible that the pick up line in the tank is too small and causing the pump to "labor" while sucking the fuel out?. Car doesn't seem to starve on fuel but thought mabe it just has to work to hard to get gas to the injectors.

Gerry, how is your pump installed? If it is a solid mount to frame or body it may produce an annoying noise. Use some rubber mountings between the pump and the body and it may quiet down.

Do you have efi? Do you have a return gas line to the tank? I know you probably know this, but efi required pressure necessitates a return line so the pump don't burn up.

I burnt a Mallory pump in the race truck (it is not efi). The Mallory techs are rebuilding it and recommended a return line to help keep the pump cool.

Before the fuel pump in my 86 Mustang 5.0 HO went out, it got noisy. If that were mine, I'd go ahead and replace the pump while it's still working.

The pump is in rubber sleve and mounted on rubber gasket to the frame. Yes I do have a return line. This is the second pump I also thought it might be defective. Gerry

on my efi set up, i had to run a surge tank to get rid of the whining.

I had it set up like Gerry, fuel filter inbetwen the gas tank and pump. I used those clear plastic filter, when i had it without the surge tank, I can see air in the filter, the whining is caused by air getting sucked into the pump.

my solution was to use a cheap high volume, low pressure pump to pump into the surge tank and the efi pump to the injectors/regulator.

gas tank -> filter -> low pressure pump -> surge tank -> EFI pump -> injector

i am pretty sure my pick up have pin hole leak on the section inside the tank that might have caused my air in the system, however, a surge tank is definitely a good idea for carb to efi conversion where the original fuel tank have no baffles inside.

Thanks all for the replys, still not sure what to di, just drive till the pump quits or look into the surge tank or pick up a Mustang gastank and build a new tank for the 56 wagon useing mustang internal pump. That sounds expensive though. Again thanks for the replys.

are you using filters that is see thru, make sure its not whining because its sucking in air, then find out why is it whining before buying parts.

I don't know if it's the same whine,but one of the pumps on my 94 pickup has been whining loudly for almost 200,000 miles and still works fine.
