I took my bird to its first car show of the season Saturday. Los of nice cars there. The time came for the awards and the MC said for the best looking 390 Ford engine the trophy goes to .... and he said my name . I was doubly shocked to say the least . Totally surprised at winning but disappointed for being told I have a 390 engine. As i went to pick up my prize I told the MC that my engine was a 292 y block and he was surprised. He told me he NEVER heard of a Y BLOCK. He didnt believe me. Luckily I had a copy of Y Block magazine and showed it to him . He reluctantly accepted it that I was correct. He walked over to my car and studied the engine for a few minutes and said "well maybe your right". The guy was as old as I was (63) and never heard of a Y Block. Before I left he was ok with my story. He said " Its still a good looking engine". That made me feel good. Next year I am going for the best looking "Flattie". If the same judge is there I just might win . Cool!!!!!!!

Wow! Was he the only judge or did several come to the same conclusion?
For that matter, can they be sure its a 390 rather than one of the other FEs?

Well until I bought My 56 I never heard of a Y Block either (shrug), but thanks to this forum, I am growing to appreciate it's potential! By the way congrats for winning, it does look great ! Think i could win best appearing engine yet?

Don't you love ignorant people ??? I once overheard a father telling his son ,( after looking at MY motor ) "That idiot has put a c%v in a FORD ??? Have a look where the dizzy is ?? It's at the back of the motor ??? " I've had experts tell me that ALL Ford motors are painted blue & have the dizzy at the front . Lon

There were 2 judges, he just happened to be the MC as well . If so then there were 2 morons judging. I did show him the dizzy location and he wasnt moved by it. I just really think they were totally ignorant to engines and maybe even cars in general. I still won the trophy and 100 bucks so he can call it what he wants.

It appears you find idiots everywhere! I had a moron at a cruise night insist that my car had a 427 in it!!!I told him that it was just a basically stock 292 Y-block. He actually called me a liar for he said he saw my car smoke the tires and said that there was no way a Y-block could do that! The REAL sad part is this PUTZ was a "so called, Ford guy"!

You know, I expect it from the kids but an older gentleman should know better, especially if he is a judge at a car show. Mater of fact there are a few kids, in my neighborhood , that know more about Ys than most people.

Y-Guy Birdman: Tell'um its a very RARE engine and that you would Take 10 grand for it right now, because you want to put a real 427" in it!!!!!!!!!!!! See if he falls for it.... Bill

I made a copy of the check and the trophy along with a copy of the paperwork indicating the votes I got and put it all in a frame with a photo of my engine. I put in on the wall in my garage and everytime I see it I laugh and shake my head. I love idiots. They keep the world turning. Well the weather is pretty nice here today. Think I will crank up the old "390" and go turn some heads.

Perhaps they should have taken this test before being on a judge. I'm not a "judge" but maybe I should be I got 9 correct. http://www.americantorque.com/game/engine-id/

Birdman: Did you say VOTES? Was it a spectator ballot box? Could be lots of idiots voting, and the "judge" may have been a vote counter. Anyway, congratulations for confusing the officials and walking away with the prize. Kinda like mid '50s Nascar.

I only got 13 right, but I think that would qualify me as a judge at this event. Unfortunately in every situation there are uninformed people (read stupid) who are in a position for which they are not qualified. I am glad however that you got the money. I like your idea of trying to be a flat head, but you might try entering as an early Pontiac, It seems they probably would not know the difference.

Didn't the Auzzies say they "invented" games! So they must have done this one. Or was that the Russians?

I wonder if the game might be a little more challenging if you through in some old Packards strait 8s and V8s, maybe an old Cad. flathead V8 or Chrysler flathead six. I have seen a few of those in Hot Rods. I wonder if the "judges" could tell a Pontiac strait eight from a Packard.

My votes were not votes. They were a cumulation of points each judge gave my engine. I said votes without thinking. I guess I am like the judges too.

So what! They loved your engine even if they couldn't figure out what it was! Congratulations! I went to a T-Bird show a few years ago. They gave a trophy to a 56 stocker. Looked really nice except for the scrub engine! Insert Obsenity here! The minus for not having a Y-Block should have taken this car right out of the running! Chuck in NH

I missed one, called the Poncho a darned 396 scrub. This is too bad because my dad had 3 389's a '59, a '63 and a '67 GTO but the aftermarket valve covers and manifold threw me off. It is a good game and as Tim says it would be fun to have some 6's, straight 8's and flathead V8's. Re Flathead V8's, there were Ford, lincoln and Cad that I know of, were there any others?

Re Flathead V8's, there were Ford, lincoln and Cad that I know of, were there any others? There was a couple of La Salle's. One was just like the Cad and another that looked like WW I aircraft engine. Sperate cylinders (in pairs) and case, that goes a ways back though. Don't forget the V8 60 Ford.

Here is the link to a reaction time Christmas Tree game that is also fun. The contrast between the on and off condition of the lights is not very good so it is sort of like a bright sunny day race. Note that this tree is based on 0.500 sec as a perfect light and 0.499sec is a red light. http://www.rbracing-rsr.com/nhraxtreesp.html
