I'm purchasing a coil for my 55 today. Pertronix ignition in the car. Which coil.......The Pertronix flamethrower list 53 milliamps, Accel lists 300 milliamps, does the disparity really mean anything. Everything else is about equal. Thanx, Gary

That coil is good. I had one in my car but switched to MSD and put in a Blaster 2 coil. It will give you good service.

Lower coil resistance/longer dwell time is always better, because you can use bigger spark plug gap and get bigger spark.

Too low coil resistance or long dwell time burns your coil, but that is very rare with aftermarket one coil systems.

The early Pertronix "Ignitor" can only handle a set-up that is 1.5 OHMS or more. That is - the coil primary resistance plus the ballast resistor (if you are using one). Otherwise the decreased resistance allows too many AMPS to flow and eats the power transistor they use to ground their system (instead of the points). I know of people who have gotten away with a total of 1.3 OHMS - but none less than that.

The second generation version "Ignitor II" has a more robust set of components - but I don't know the minimum OHMS for that one.
