hello all new to the Y block field i have a 76 F100 i use as a daily driver, anyway i just got my 62 galaxie 500 the brakes are gone right now waiting on parts, its got a 292 in it that has been sitting for 20 years inside. car fired right up when i got it smoked alot like wow hahaha but i let it run everyday for about an hour or so smoke is pretty much gone. so i did my tune up changed the oil 10w30 with a bottle of zddp and a knn oil filter the fuel tank is plugged right now so i run it off a gas can replaced the wires air filter new breather cap new coil rotor button dist cap then i tried to changed the spark plugs i got one out with out to much of a fight the others will not budge sprayed pentrating oil on them let them sit then tried again i tried with the engine hot also i used a breaker bar on one working it back and forth i got it to turn just a little i'm afraid of snaping them off in the heads how do i get them out??

also i knew y blocks make more valve noise than lets say my 302 in the truck but this one makes alot cold hot doesnt really matter, and the left side of the motor (passenger side) makes way more noise than the other side is that normal do i need to pull the valve cover maybe a lash adjustment is needed?? it has been sitting for 20 years

thanks -jason

I'll let someone else take the plug question.

Do you see oil coming out of the rocker arm overflow tubes? Are the rockers wet or dry; does it look like oil is flowing. It will be noisier than a hydraulic engine. It may be difficult to tell if it is normal if you have not heard one known to be in good working order.

well i have not pulled the valve covers yet can you run the engine with them off? i'll have to pull them and check this week. all i know is that the rockers are rail mounted i think? how does the oiling work up there on this engine when its working right?

Your rockers are on a shaft.  Oil comes up through the bottom of the second from last stantion, and floods the inside of the shaft.  From there, it's a 'drip' system at atmospheric pressure.  Your rockers have two holes in each.  If they aren't plugged with dirt and varnish, you should see oil coming out of each rocker arm.  If you don't, shut down and disassemble the shaft and rocker arms.  Inspect the shaft for wear.

Do one side at a time and take lots of pictures.

Make sure the engine has been sufficiently warmed up and then cooled completely back down.  If the engine has been hot, then continue soaking the plugs with penetrating oil and just put some muscle into the wrench to break them loose.  As soon as they break loose, then be sure to squirt some more penetrant onto the threads to help them on out.  Working the sparkplugs back and forth as they are coming out may also be of some benefit in saving the threads in the heads.

Here's the link for the various methods for adjusting the valve lash.

Setting the valves

took the valve covers off a couple of days ago figured out why the engine is so loud had 2 bent push rods on the left side and one gone and another one bent on the right side also put a oil pressure gauge on the car because the oil light would start flickering when i stop with the car in drive well it only makes (according to the guage) about 32 psi when cold when its hot in park it makes about 5 and in drive with the engine hot it doesnt register on the gauge. the rocker arms get no oil they were pretty scored up i couldnt reuse them i bought some 1.54 ratio rockers and new shafts but i was wondering what would cause the oil pressure to be that low the engine sat for about 20 years and the heads were very very dirty when i took the valve covers off the guy said it only has 125000 miles on it from the condition of the body i beleive him i bought a nos oil pump before i put it on i was wondering if yall had any thoughts about maybe cleaning the motor out some way with the oil pan off or something ? and why the low oil pressure?

Jason, I don't want to sound cruel, but I would tear this engine down and do a major overhaul.  You will save lots of money if you can do most of the work yourself.

Take the heads off, pull the block out, strip everything out.  Keep track and take lots of pictures of your parts as you go.  90% of the work is cleaning parts.

The engine has well over 120,000 miles and I'm sure your cylinders are bell-shaped.  Take your bare block and bare heads to an engine-machine shop and have him boil your castings.  They will remove all the plugs.  When it comes out of the tank, the castings will look like new.  The next step is to determine if there are any cracks in your castings, by magnafluxing.  If your castings have major issues, it doesn't make sense to continue.  If everything is ok, now is the time to measure your cylinders for new pistons.  The machine shop will determine how much to take off your cylinders, then he will wait until the pistons arrive before he cuts your block.  Piston to bore clearance is 1-1/2 to 2 thousandths.  He has to measure the new pistons in order to bore and hone your cylinders to size.

I recently went through this exact process.  It is costly but you will have a brand new Y-Block, bigger and better than new.  My machine shop took .060" off my cylinders, now my 292 is over 300 cubes.  They could have safely taken .120" off.  I also changed rocker shafts.

Check out my web site (below) and look through the pictures.  My engine looked real bad with dirt and varnish, but the crank and cam looked beautiful.  You will need a compete gasket set, might as well do the job once, and do it right.  All new gaskets and seals will help a lot.

Jason.  This really deserved to be a new topic.  But sounds like you simply have an engine with excessive bearing clearances and potentially some other problems with the noted mileage it has.  A rebuild in your case would be in order.
