Bore size

Hi, from a new member in Australia.

My 272+40 CEBY block is currently in the machine shop waiting for me to decide what bore size to go. Every thing I have researched indicates that up to 3.83 is not a problem, but an Aus. parts supplies who specializes in Y-blocks told me not to go over 292 because there is not enough meat to go any bigger. Are the Canadian/Aus blocks different to the U.S. cast ones? cheers Peter

Is there any way you can sonic test the block to see the thickness in the cylinder walls? You can go as big as you want as long as you can keep at least onehundred thousands inch thick in the walls and keeping the engine naturally aspirated.   I don't see why it can't be taken out to 3.83 but it pays to be sure than to be sorry later.

Hey Pete ,

Welcome to the site . I'll agree with Gary .Get the block sonic tested .There are a few good guys to talk to in Australia .Give Cusso Bill or John ,from John's Rod & Custom a call . These guys are very helpfull .Be careful of the brand of pistons you buy ?? Some are almost impossible to balance because of their weight . Talk to you engine builder on this matter .Also another hint , try to deck the block so your pistons are at zero deck height .This will help with your compression.Where do you live ?

After a bit more thought on the bore size I have decided to stay at 292 and look out for a 312 crank and rods which should work better in the heavier panel van. By my calculations the bore/stroke ratio is almost the same as the standard 272 and would give 304, right on 5 litres.

How long have you owned the truck ? Was in RHD or did you convert it ? There was a 59 at Wintersun last year . I think it belonged to a Hot Rod shop from Sydney .Sure looks nice & low .Have you spoken to John in Melbourne ?? Really nice to see such a rare truck on the road .Were they sold in Au or was it imported ?

Hi Lon and company, I've owned the panel for 18 months, the previous owner had it for about 8yrs as his work truck, he had a 460 auto in it and put the original Y-block and 4sp back in it at sale time. Don't know how many owners it's had, it an original RHD Aussie model that started life as an ambulance. I've had a Jag XJ6 front end fitted and am looking at swapping to a T5 gearbox to go with the engine rebuild.  cheers Peter
