I have a curious, oval shaped hole in my firewall just above and behind the drivers side valve cover. It's about 1" x 1.5" (guess).Any ideas what it was used for? Nothing seems to fit there.

Also any suggestions for "cleaning up" the firewall? I'd like to get the engine bay as clean as possible and get rid of all those extra holes that have appeared in the last 50 years. Chuck

Hey Chuck; I went to the hardware and got a bunch of plastic plugs, then painted to match body color. I know proper way is to weld, but I'm not a welder. This looks decent and it's much better than all that heated air getting in.   Hope it helps. God Bless  Eddie

Now I need to do some more research. I got the car with a FordOMatic in it. Guess I need to check the VIN someday. Funny after nearly 20 years of ownership I've never done that.

The plastic plugs sound like a decent idea for us non welders.

Chuck:

I'm sure Ford would not have made a separate body for cars with OD.  Probably all '56s had the hole stamped in the firewall, and either left a knockout (like electrical boxes have) in it or put a rubber plug in it for non-OD cars.

Chuckie,

Concours and Dennis Carpenter have some odd shaped rubber plugs. You can see them on their on line catalogs. This sounds like the OD cable cutout to me.

john is right all body styles had the knock out plug in the firewall. they only knocked it out for overdrive cars for the cable to run thru.there is nothing in the data plate that says what trans. is in the car  just engine size. i might have the rubber grommet you need  carl
