Some time back I posted a question regarding the prospects of replacing the rear main seal on a 312. Got some great advice and it was suggested that I use the forum search feature, which was very helpful. I ordered a seal from John Mummert and got busy. Upon disassembly I discovered that approximately on e third of the rope seal was missing. I took a stiff wire and folded the end over and used it to push out the remaining rope seal in the block. I then took a couple of pipe cleaners and twisted them together for length and used that to clean the upper area. Did the assembly based on the instructions.
I am not able to drive the car for other reasons but have had it running numerous times to move it around and everything appears to be dry.
