Our generator and frame rail want to occupy the same space. Anyone have any creative ideas??

Swing it to the top. You will need to make a bottom brace but easy enough. Different belt as well.

neat ideas on the alt. mounts, for the time being I would like to retain the gen. as I like the way it looks on our project, wouldn't like to notch the frame if we could help it but that might be an option...

Dan: I think Birdman has the only workable idea short of major mods. And yes, an alternator will look out of place on that chassis. (and does on a lot of others too)

Hey Dan,

glad the generator got there ok; good luck getting it to fit; I'm with the side favoring keeping it, although I did replace it after having it rebuilt w/an alternator on my 57 Fairlane...

Wonder how much it would be safe to notch the frame? Another thought I am having is raising the mounting points on all the brackets like 1" and that would probably give me clearance.

I vote with Birdman -  use the fab skills you'd spend on the frame mod - making up some higher mounting brackets. Notching that frame ought to be your last resort!

Check the installation on a t-bird.....if you have the space between the pulleys and rad,the gen. sits in front of the block,but you will also need the spacer that goes behind the water pump(the spacer moves the pump forward to align with the relocated gen.) One other concern is the terminal on the gen. being too close to the engine....the t-bird suppliers sell a kit to covert the pass. car gen to a t-bird style. They also sell all the brackets you would need,even the spacer...Frank Rice from this site used to sell the spacer as well . The hardest part of this idea is the bottom pulley that drives everything.The t-bird ones are quite expensive.  If there is room to flip the gen above the frame rail, it might be cheaper just making new mounting brackets , as suggested  in an earlier post above. Hood side panels might be an interference,but I don't know if you were planning on those. Good luck    Barry

looks like when we have it all bolted up with the proper size harware and the brackets in the correct place we might have JUST enough room, depending on what we can find for a fan belt. Will have to wait till we get the crank in the engine to get the pulley on. Anyone have a part # handy for the belt we need (single belt, generator to water pump no other accessories??) thanks-
