Okay, I bought this Y-Block with a couple mods: top oiler kit, etc etc. One of them was the conversion to use a spin on filter. When I just picked my motor up from being rebuilt, They didn't keep the old filter on there, so now i'm lost as to what filter I need. I've worked as a general technician so I know the basic sizes of filters, I just don't want to get one too long or too short. What size spin on filters do you guys use (ASSUMING they're the same diameter as mine), If I remember correctly mine was perdy long..
BTW 292 Y ;-).

Fram number is PH8A. You can cross that over to your favorite brand. It is a very popular filter.

I'll cross reference but was thinkin something along the lines of a 1515 (Napa= FIL1515) would be the right one...
I also heard that FRAM is a horrid filter????

You heard right, I stay away from fram as well, being it's another cheap product made in china like about everything else .

I sold Fram filters for many years until Walmart came to town in 1989 and cut my price. If I cut the price a nickel, they would do the same. I finally quit selling filters. Other than that, I don't think they are all that bad. Ford used the same filter for almost 40 years and most replacements were probably Fram. And many y blocks were converted to accept a spin on when people discovered the ease of changing a spin on. I don't have a NAPA catalog, but everyone makes different grades of filters. Fram's basic old filter is PH8A, then comes the DG8A, TG8A and XG8A. They all fit. NAPA might cross the different grades to their different grades. Discussing different brands of filters can open up a big can of worms.

If you go for a NAPA filter, get the GOLD. Supposedly one of the best filters on the market.

I've been partial to WIX filters for a long time. Super filtration and good quality. Please don't tell me they are made in New Delhi! Chuck in NH

I like the Ford filter, it has a check valve that keeps pressure up, so when you start the car the oil is stll there. Just my 2 cents. God Bless Eddie

Never, ever, ever use a Group 7 cheapo oil filter, When I was a Ford Service manager, we got a bulletin that if a customer had engine problems and a group 7 filter was on it we could void the warranty!

When I was in Europe, the Fiat given to me to use had a screen! What the... where's the filter? VW's had screens, too. So did a host of others. Most of our oil gets bypassed by the filter, hopefully until the next time around (maybe). All the junk in your oil pan passes through a gross pickup screen, then to your oil pump rotors BEFORE it gets to the filter. Real race cars use TWO oil filters to ensure most of the oil really gets filtered. Bottom line is, the REAL filtration comes when you dump the old oil, and replace it with fresh, particularly if you do it at regular 3,000 mile intervals. Guys who extend their oil changes need to be much more concerned over the best filter they can find.

My filter choices I use is K&N and Purolator. I heard that Fram such exam> PH8A can have a tendency to starve an engine for oil because of the paper type filtering system dosen't let enough oil thru especially in high performance applications.

dinosaur don't you mean "knize" instead of "kinze"? that may be why some are having trouble reading it...try using your link - I could not.

Yep, the flow restrictions from fram was what some of the engine building shops talked about in this part of the country where nascar is popular. I do remember reading this thread or one like it in the past as well, and it's good to continue bringing it up once in a while for new people coming to the site and for the other Great information it has.

Whats the Reader Digest version? I know NAPA are Wix and Motorcraft are good .. I don't need to know much else .. I really don't need to know the history of oil filters .. Just the bottom line, what's good, what's bad .. I basically get the gist of the whole thing.

Simple answer WIX. I just had a cam failure as in 'FLAT' with a broken lifter. The filter was full of particles, it caught it all. That's why you use the the best. Use the premium WIX 51515. I bet my engine on them.
Jim
PS: I'm an old Purolator Filter salesman and I still use WIX.

I use a Motorcraft FL- 300 on my 56 ford, its a smaller filter and its easier to install with power steering than the FL 1 A. Carl
