OK - I have located a decent blower setup for my Y that is on the engine test stand, looking to debut this setup at the end of July in Somerset, PA - just for fun on the trailer.

You got to love tradin'. The fella I got this from swears up and down that this set up was on a Y block. Here is the crank pulley, but no number anywhere, and it has an obvious repair. Someone did balance the thing, or tried too at least...w00t

And here is the bracket that holds the blower. For the life of me, I could not tell during mock up which way this thing is supposed to sit. It looks as if the two bolt holes are the exact same width apart as the water pump holes are,,,but I keep thinking that this looks like a passenger side bracket, not a drivers side bracket (take a look below at the airbox)...

The tensioner arm number is 37603   and    F-20940.

The airbox...

Inside the airbox is a nice little Bendix Stromberg 4 bolt carburetor with Model WW. Isn't this a Studebaker box? Could this be adapted to a Y? The blower that came with the setup says McCulloch Supercharger on the plate, not Studebaker.

Now the for two UFO's Hehe Hehe Hehe Hehe

I have no cotton-pickin' idea what these little doohickeys are. They are metal discs about 2 inches across or so. The bolts are just loose through the middle connected to a nut. Ideas?

One small bracket...

Once the blower bracket is oriented correctly, I am sure that this will come into view also.

I searched the VS57 website pretty closely. Did find the airbox, but no diagrams or good photos of the bracket and how it should bolt to the Y. Anybody running this set up and have a decent looking photo to shoot back at me? Cool

Danny,

Google Frank Stubbs in Oregon (?). He's got a '56 wagon with this setup. Maybe he can help you.

By miker - 16 Years Ago
Frank Stubbs is in Washington, and his 56 has a VR series (last I saw) but it had a McCullogh (not 57 Ford) kit in the back when he bought it. He was good enough to let me look at his F code 'birds when I was putting an SN 93 on my 'bird. I have an original VS series bracket to mount the McC on the driver side, and we reverse engineered it to the pass. side. Frank finally looked at the part in my hand and said "What's that?" When I told him he showed me what he had in the back of the wagon. My best guess is that it's either an early Stude set up, or Kaiser parts. The Kaisers were two barrel Continental sixes, I don't know about the early Stude's. The after market McCullogh kits used the long arm idler, mounted (typically) horizontally across the top of the motor. The pulley looks to have a taper, and for the 'bird, I had a shallow disc turned to fit the pulley on one side and the rivets in the stock front pulley on the other side. Frank would know about the pass. car pulley, but I don't think it has a taper. Track down Craig Conley at Paradise Wheels, he's in the vendor section at VS57, call him and tell him you're sending pictures. He's got all the old molds, and know this stuff cold. It might take a while to get him, during the Vintage Trans Am series time, he's very busy.

Frank and Miker, I sent an e-mail out to Craig Conley (with photos). We will see what he can come up with. If memory serves, I contacted him last year and he did show me a bracket for the vs57 that mounted the blower right above the timing cover. To me, I like the side location better, but only because of the way it looks. I would assume that a side mount would give easier access to the intake anyway.

anywho...Hehe

I will try to locate stubbs

Boy that was fast! Craig already contacted me and we spoke on the phone this morning. Most of the items are trade bait, unfortunately. The box is stubebaker, but the bracket and crank pulley are Y. Bracket will not work for what I am going to do, sooo... I may end up purchasing a couple of parts from him.

The discs remain unidentified.

There you go Dan, & thanks Mike. I guess I need to look at the article on the wagn again. I'd thought it had the dealer installed VS kit.

Daniel, craig conley is difinitely the guy with the good hard to get parts for these mcculloch blowers, this is bracket he supplied me for one of my installations. regards bill

I have a lot of luck with John Erb. He is still actively racing at the Salt Flats. Nothing wrong with Paradise Wheels. I've bought parts from both. Chuck in NH

Chuck, yes i believe john Erb is the real expert with these blowers, he lives and breathes them, i believe he was with them most of the way through, i allways found it hard to find his contact details, so thank you for that. Best regards. aussiebill.

AussieBill,

That bracket looks just like the one I have. I thought it bolted to the water pump bolts, but did not believe that the pulley swung over that much to the passenger side. Maybe I can use my bracket after all. I will have to mock some things up. From the photo, it looks like the rear of the blower is very close to the front of the valve cover on that drivers side. How much clearance do you actually have? I also see that you have spacers behind the bracket where it bolts to the water pump. Any reason why you had to space it forward? And since you did, does your crank pulley even resemble what I've got?

Another thought for you - are you going to run the original setup where the solenoid actually engages off of engine vacuum, or are you going to do some type of fixed ratio?

And where did you find that airbox? is that Y specific?

Those were just the photos I was looking for - thanks! Cool

Very interesting. My mount supports the blower lower, and from underneath the case, rather than the side. It also involved removing the p/s pump to the pass side, and it looks like yours might clear one. Early and late models, maybe? Your's also looks more substantial.

Miker, from what Craig told me there were quite a few brackets (he said that all of them were handmade by paxton???) for different applications. He commented that he believed that my bracket was originally intended for a Thunderbird because of the low mounting of the blower, but did not say the side it would have been bolted to nor the orientation of the blower.

He went on to say that these units are difficult at best to get working properly unless you have all of the parts to an original "kit". Of course, who is going to have an NOS paxton mcculloch kit for your car laying around in their garage? Definitely piece-meal, but then how much fun would it be to just bolt something on all the time? Period speed equipment has the look of Y block legend that I am looking for...worth it to go through the trouble.Wink

Daniel, i had to space bracket 5/8" out from waterpump as back of bracket hits on top of waterpump bypass part of the w/pump casting, cant see any other way. You are right in that the blower case is just clear of valve cover, but longer spacers you could increase that, the intake part of the case is close to top of valve cover but hose would be sitting on cover, i think its allways a compromise when fitting unusual application of old things. i then machined pulley spacer so total height of pulley is 4". i used john deere 7" pulley that craig supplied and had adapter made. The Moreco or Mcculloch airbox is for tripower application, a lot of fiddling but unique! as for the vacuum switch to operate variable boost pulley, i will see what vacuum i have and go that way or via micro switch, i have spent a lot of time but over a long time getting all the bits and am getting closer, . p.s we are long way from the parts scources. Best regards in yblocking!.

    Bill,

Ted Harbit used to work on them as well, the blowers are big players in the Studebaker thing, so you might Google The Studebaker Drivers site and see who's doing them now. Hoosier Hurricane may help here, he also has a South Bend Car.

Frank, I don't spend much time on the HAMB, but it was raining yesterday and I saw the thread on Ted Harbit's wreck. He is one lucky man, not so good for the Stude. Hope he is recovering OK.

Glenn.

John (Hoosier) and Ted are good friends, which is how I came to meet Ted. The man is absolutely a class act. He's home and has started sending jokes to us again, so he must be feeling better. Had the car for 40+ years. He won his class at Indy, as a stocker, a number of times. The first guy to congratulate me on a sub 14 second run (at Muncie) in the red car....was Ted. To watch him run in his pure stock (Supercharged) Lark makes it impossible to believe he's 74, 4 speed sounds like Ronny Sox is in the car!w00t

The 56 style bracket is the one I'm using. No real clearance problems. The power steering pump is fine. I have an after market aluminum water pump pulley that is a bit thicker so I had to do some spacing on that. Keep in mind you can "clock" the rear cover of the blower to move the output hose around. What is the difference in the pulleys? I have one of each now. The first I used has a deep center that reaches the pulley bolt area, the one I just got looks like the smaller one in the pictures. Is the small one T-Bird? Chuck in NH
