Hey I have a Y-Block that I pulled out of a '58 Fairlane, I was told it was a 292 but upon further inspection I think it maybe a 312. The block casting # is EDB 6015 E, and the heads a ECZ-G. any info would be helpful... Thanks John

312 engine 1957 vintage found in passenger cars and TBird(supercharged) 300 HP 1.925 intake valves and 1.510 exhaust. You have a winner!

EDB would be correct for a '58 292. Although ECZ on the block or crank would indicate a 312, ECZ heads where used on 272s and 292s as well as 312s. Before some one corrects me, ECZ casting on the block does not always mean a 312, it must also have ECZ caps.

According to my book ECZ blocks were 58 & 59 292s, EDB-D&E were 57 312s. Now I'm confused. (which isnt hard to do) I am suffering from shingles and my mind is elsewhere.

To the best of my knowledge ECZ blocks can be either 292s or 312s, best to check the crank for the dot. I also found that EDB-E can be a Merc 312 but again when in doubt check the crank or the main caps.

Further, no 58 Fords had 312s. Only some Mercs. If the engine is a Merc, if not repainted it will likely be a blue green color. As stated, for a 312, check for a 5/16" diameter shallow dot on the crank flange & or ECZ on the main caps. Then with your fingers crossed, check the main areas for possible cracks, before spending money on it...
