hey yall,

putting a new oil pump on the galaxie this weekend (last ditch effort to get the oil pressure up) with a new pan and pickup (mines dented up pretty good) got the gasket for pan and pump my pump is a NOS pump off ebay so i bought a new gasket for it it didnt have one with it.

what i was wondering is how do you change the pump and pan any special tools needed or anything? i know it is external with a pickup tube that goes into the pan thats about all i know.

thanks!

Jason, everything is pretty straight forward.  The pump is nothing special, just very easy to change because it's on the outside.  Normally, you wouldn't need to change the pickup tube.  One nut detatches the tube at the pump, then three mounting screws drops the pump in your hand.

Use a new tube gasket when re-installing, and tighten so the pump doesn't suck air.  It's always a good idea to attach a gauge just to check your oil pressure.

Jason; You don't say, how low was the pressure? On occasion new pumps have trouble with priming, I suggest you work a bit of oil into it before installation. And I found it necessary on my recent installation, to put a bit of sealer on the bolts to stop oil seepage.

Jason ,

I asume you have checked oil pressure with another gauge ??? I had the same problem with a temp gauge .Here I was thinking ,new water pump ,new radiator, etc, etc,??? .Turned out to be a faulty ( NEW ) gauge .

As mentioned before prime the pump, I like to use assembly lube or something heavy like STP, just pour some in the pump and rotate.  Also the order to remove and replace, take the pan off first then the pump. Install the pump first (with driveshaft installed) then slip the pickup tube into the pump and bolt the pan up.  Tighten the collar on the tube to the pump, pretty much take it down till it bottoms. If you pulled the dizzy for this project prime the engine by hand or with a 1/2" drill motor, if you left the dizzy in crank it with the coil disconnected till you get oil pressure.
