Back in the day, apparently one way to hop up your car for racing was to recurve the distributor so max advance came in at a lower RPM.

But, never was clear on the reasons factory specs. were so conservative, especially with 50's "race-on-Sunday, sell-on-Monday" mindset.

I KNOW the consequence of too much initial advance, but what happens when you cruise/run around town with an aggressive racing recurve?

I have run aggressive curves on the street for years.  Remember how the '55-'56 Fords sounded kind of flat with factory duals?  Lazy curve and Loadomatics.  I think the factory used mild curves to avoid warranty problems with the poorest of fuels available in the day.
