Hi Everyone,

I posted this information about a month ago looking for identification of the transmission listed below. It turned out to be a three speed overdrive transmission.

So, my question is:

Would this be a good option for a Y block? My car currently has a three on the tree. I would like a t-5, but I already have this trans on hand.

Thanks for any input. I don't know much about Y Blocks yet.

Output Shaft - 1 3/16" / 28 spline

Thanks. 54FordWagon

It'll work fine on a street machine. You'll want to change the rear end out to something in the middle 3's and you'll need a different clutch disc, acouple of holes drilled in the tranny to adapt it and the correct shifter. Not the same as the toploader 4 speed.

The only caution I would express is the difference between gear ratios, especially the 2nd to 3rd. It is not the best and some guys complained about this..

I had a similar trans in a 77 Granada, 250 6 cylinder and was very happy with the trans

I'm running the same trans--'77-'78 3-speed overdrive and it should have 2 bolt holes at each corner.I'm running a Y-block and it bolts right up to the stock Y-block bellhousing and the shift handle says "Hurst" on it,not sure if the linkage is or not,but the shift pattern is standard "H" and Reverse is over to the left and up.It's not bad around town in the 1st three gears and I shift into overdrive around 50 mph although I can run in overdrive in town and it doesn't lug the motor but 70 on the freeway sounds like it's buzzing the motor or maybe I'm not use to the rpm at that speed. Ran one in my 56 bird and did not like it at all!!!! for performance. Everything I've read in the Hotrod magazines etc confirmed even the overdrive is not enough to make much of a difference at 70 mph on freeways and their suggestion was run it to the nearest dumpster and get rid of it. First gear is great for out of the hole shot but after that it's all down hillw00t
