i am interested to see if any galaxie owners have flowmasters on the 292 y blocks. I am interested in listening to sound clips.

Hey Gentz; I have Dynamaxs on my bird and I love the way it sounds. Here in Calif. all the srubs have Flowmasters, so wanted something different. Real happy with what I have!! Hope this helps!! God Bless Eddie

Y-Guy Gentz: If you want a unique sound, that will have people looking under your "Y", get an old driveshaft, cut it into a couple of 12/20" sections, cap the ends with whatever size piping you're using, and weld'em in. Depending on cam choice, sound is "different" Bill

I make mufflers out of tubing for my GMC inliners like we did 50 years ago. But on my Y blocks, I use Smithy glass packs. That gives them that unmistakable y block sound that they became famous for in the 50's.

So it seems glasspask give th y's the distinct sound. interesting i will be installing a cruise nite special cam so i want the cam sound definatly heard but not super loud.

Gentz I have 2 1/2"Dynomax mufflers on my T bird and 2 1/4" on my truck. Both engines are 301" 292s and I am told both sound good. They do not have that old timey rap and they don't backfire on decceleration. They are not too loud unless i get on them then they sound great. There was a noticable improvement in performance when I removed old glass packs and the stock ex manifolds from the truck and replaced them with ramshorns and the Dynomax. The one complaint I have with the Dynomax is that there is a really pronounced resonance in the pass compartment at idle and just off idle speed with both the car and the truck. It is more pronounced in the truck and is quite annoying. I have ridden a lot of miles in another Yblock powered truck that has headers and Flowmasters and never noticed the resonance. I would be interested to know if others with Dynomax mufflers have experienced the same resonance. Eddie??

Like Eddie, I wanted something different. My 317" Y is running Reds' 2 tube headers 2 1/4" pipes and 2 1/4" Spin Tech mufflers. No resonance in the cab and will still let her talk when getting on it or when backing down from 4,000 rpm in 2nd. TC

Hey Doug; I'm running Sanderson's headers-- 331 stroker--- Engle Cam -- John M. engine. I came off the headers with 2 1/2 pipe straight thru the X member to Dynamatt standing up, just behind the back X. (Where the original 56 birds had a resonator) Have not experienced any dronning-- Jeezes I forgot--I have a crossover pipe just before the head pipes go into the mufflers. Bent a curve in the crossover to clear the driveshaft. I really like the way it sounds. Another Thought -- Just want to THANK all you guys that gave your time for our FREEDOM. Because of an accident at 12 years old I could not go; But sure appreciate all you that was able.. GOD LOVE YOU and BLESS YOU ALL Eddie

Hi Eddie My Bird has equal length headers to 2 1/2" collector with a cross over under the trany and the mufflers in the original location. 2 1/2 Exhaust under rear bumper. The truck as mentioned has rams horns 2 1/4" pipes no crossover and dumps under the bed in front of the axle.

The flowmaster web site has sound clips but I think its small block ford v-8. If you like that, the Y block will be even better. I have a set waiting to be installed, but a ways down the road.

Based on research and exchanging information with a lot of others, I chose the 50's. I think the 40's would probably sound better, but then you have to consider the sound inside the cab too. I went more conservative hoping the sound of the 50's will still be good but also give me a quiet ride in the cab on them long hauls to the next rod run. Unfortunately, I do not have my truck running yet to tell you if I am happy with them. I can tell you I have never heard a Y-Block that did not sound good.

I have the Flowmaster Hushpower mufflers without a crossover and headers. They have 2 1/2 inch input size and 2 1/4 outlet and 2 1/4 pipes in the stock 55 Tbird location. They are advertised as the sound of the 50's and do just that. I do not have any resonate issues and they sound good. Without the crossover pipe they tend to rap when I gear down and I love that. They are rated up to 400 HP and is the only drawback I have with them. I just looked on line to see if they offer a higher horspower option and could not even find any of the Hushpowers I have listed, I'll have to call them Monday to see if they still offer them and to see if they have them for higher horsepower. SUPREME BEING ; Are Smithy , "Smitty" steel packs still available like we used in the 50's ?? please advise ..... Hushpowers are glasspacks/steelpacks ;-)..Just get the longest glasspack you can get a hold of, nice rumble, not too loud ...

On the youtube Vic Correnti is showing from Charlies clips at the drags the black 56 bird with the white top is mine and it has hushpowers as well, and they do a great job producing the 50s sound. Vic, when I talked with them at flowmaster even though they say up to 400 hp I was told they can go some past the 400 hp max, they are just staying on the conservative side to play it safe.

The red car runs them also. Pretty much the same as Vic's, 2 1/2" pipes, X crossover etc. Sounds good, some resonance inside at cruise. I don't have the HP Vic does, but the car runs the same mph with the mufflers as it does with open headers.

I cant send a sound clip because using a computor is difficult enough but sanderson headers and magnaflows sound great . Good throaty sound and you can still have a normal conversation inside the cab .... until you get on the gas and that is usually short lived then back to normal . pricey , but worth it.

I just have a thing about flow masters I think. I have heard so many on Chevys and I just can't stand that hollow/tinny sound. They may not sound like that on a Y. I have 2 1/4" Magnaflows on my '56 and it sounds great (to me). Not loud and all Magnaflows are stainless, a good thing.

My experience with exhaust is the most important part is what you do after the muffler. If you end the system before the rear axle you can expect a lot of resonance in the car/cab. If you take the tail pipes over the axle and turn out behind the rear wheels it is greatly reduced. If you get all the way to the rear bumper you will get little or no rumble in the car/cab. I have 2 chamber Flow Masters with headers on my Ranchero and they sound great in a parking lot but are very annoying at freeway speed.
