Ok, second question for you guess. When I am driving and come to a stop at times the oil pressure light will come on. How do I figure out what is going on here? I believe that when I changed the oil I used 10-40 but might have used 10-50 and it is a 292 with screw on oil filter. I checked the oil level and that is still fine. Any help would be great and please be specific about directions because I am a shade tree at best with these engines. thanks again Cbass

Car or Truck?
Some truck pans have no baffles. When you stop, the oil rushes to the front of the pan, away from the pickup and the pressure drops.

Some truck pans have a baffle in them. You can find one of those and swap it. You can also make a baffle and tack-weld it in place. You can also put a gated baffle in there. The gate closes when you stop, virtually stopping the oil from moving away from the pickup, but allows oil to return to the pick-up area when driving normally.

It is surprising how well the simple vertical baffle in later pans works. Since switching, the oil pressure has never nosedived during stops, which it did frequently with the open pan.

Is there any other solution anybody might have. I do not have a welder so this is kind of out. I figure these trucks have been running for over 50 years with this set up they must have something that makes it so the light doesnt come on every time you break, seams like people would have been pretty upset if they just bought a truck and it did this? Ideas?

Ideas?You may have a partially clogged pick up screen The change may be easier than you think, and may not cost much, depending on how much you have to pay for a pan. Look under the truck and see what is in the way of dropping the pan. If not too much, then just buying a pan with the baffle and swapping it may be the easiest course. Cost - one pan and one gasket.

If the light comes on just as you complete your stop, an extra quart of oil may help. If the light comes on as you sit idle at the stoplight, then the engine has low oil pressure, could be a worn pump or worn bearings. Put a mechanical gauge on it and see what the actual pressure is.

Thanks for the heads up on the ebay pan, I had alread saw it but wasnt sure it would work for my truck. It is only coming on when stopping not at idle and I thought of putting another pint of oil in but I have heard that to much oil is really bad also. Will one pint extra fall into this category? Thanks for all the help guys.

That big ol' tub of a pan can hold an extra quart without being too full. Too full means the pan is so full that the spinning crankshaft contacts the oil in the pan and whips it into a foam. You can try it a pint at a time if you are more comfortable with that.

Are you sure you really need that oil pan on ebay? I happen to be the fella who put it up for .99 cents. To clarify, it does not have a vertical baffle, just the horizontal job like most stock pans have. Does your oil pressure light stay on when parked at idle for a length of time? My 55 Club with 272 used to do that - I found out it had bad mains. Could have driven the thing forever, it just would not give up, even with the rear mail seal going out on it because of the the blow by and the crankshaft rotation with bad main bearings. Jessup, it does not stay on when idling, just when coming to a stop. I will keep a eye on your ebay pan, because if I can get it cheap then I will have it to work on without taking the truck out of service. Thanks for the help, by the way that pan is from a 292 truck right? Cbass

Sorry about that pan - I have been up in PA for a few days with all of my in-laws (really, it was a good time - I have got some pretty good in-laws! Just ask Dennis Leeking, the pintoplumber - he has met them before). So I missed all the bidding, etc. The pan was from a 292. I probably have another - give me a few weeks to find it. Its cool Dan, I will drop you a line. I was just going to update on this, I put in a extra pint of oil as suggested and this morning I did not have the problem any more. I think that I will still put a new pan with baffles in and pull the valve cover to check the condition but at least that darn light has stopped taunting me. Thanks to all for the help. Cbass
