I've been lurking here off and on for a few years now as projects dictate. Got a new project and starting to get into it deeper than I wanted. This is a supposed 64 Ford one ton truck with FWD,chassis and running gear. Has a 36 Ford cab mounted on it and has been made into a repicla log truck. Looks really cool and fits my "vintage". I bought it this way and so far have only done external things to it, lights, mirrors etc. I'm finding out the engine is starting to become a problem as the lifters ain't taking quieting adjustment. Also don't think this is a 64 engine, breather tube is down on front left corner and a 292 truck engine I put in my car years ago the breather tube is on rear of engine. Am I right? Casting number on the block is 6015A. I don't have the lit. to research this number but I know one of you guys do and could use some verification help. I have some various parts laying around, blocks, etc and was wondering if there is a diff. in lifters on these engines. Are the 272,292 and 312 lifters and pushrods, rockers etc the same? Looks life the rear main has a leak also and I changed oil and added a jug of Lucas stop leak. The top of the engine looks clean and I used Citgo 10W-30 oil, which is what I have used for about 40 years in all my cars. Hoping to hear some advise from the guys in the know. Terry

I think your right about the breather. I have a 60's engine in my 57 and it has a breather tube in the valley pan. 6015 is just a generic number for an engine block. From the home page here, link over to John Mummerts site. He has all the info you need to see what you have.

I noticed that my C2 engine has a road draft canister. I haven't taken it apart yet to see if it looks like a factory job or a back yard job. C2 would have been 62-64. Lifters are the same. Pushrods vary in length depending on the head being used. There are 2 ratios of rocker arms but both can be used.
Are your rockers getting oil? Check out the specs on that 10w30 you're using. It may not have the required levels of zddp for a flat tappet engine.

Tnx for the replys guys. The oil is API rated SL so it does have the zinc in it. And it doesn't seem to be getting enough oil on the right bank and fair amount on the left bank. Got some grime out of the oil holes but the engine was not really dirty and sludged up. Oil pressure cold is over 40 lbs and hot it's almost zip at idle. Years ago there was an aftermarket kit sold to take oil from the pan and put it up in the rockers to cut down all the lifter noise. Those were the days of straight weight oil and non detergent, different ball game today. Oil is multi weight and runs freely now. I use the same oil in a 292 truck engine that I put in my 55 Merc 20 years ago, same in a 239 flathead, never a problem. If this engine was sludged up I could understand the problem but thats not the case. Lifters? pushrods? take apart ,clean and put back in??? I'm open to suggestions. Terry

If the oil pressure is zip at hot idle, that wouldn't help the oiling problem on the one bank. The pump is external so try a replacement first. Prime the pump before installation. And are you familiar with setting the valves?.. There are several discussions on doing it, so if not sure, search back.

Terry. Welcome to the site.
Terry Flannery (8/26/2009) The oil is API rated SL so it does have the zinc in it.The SL oils in the 10W-30 weights also have a reduced amount of zinc / phosphorus (zddp) versus that of the SJ and earlier oils. If you’ll use a SL or SM oil that is 10W-40, you will still be maintaining the higher levels of zddp as the earlier oils. For the SM rated oils, it’s just those with 30W or less on the label that have had the zinc reduction. Oil pressure cold is over 40 lbs and hot it's almost zip at idle. Sounds like worn engine bearings. 55-60 psi oil pressure at a cold fast idle is normal for a Y with minimal bearing wear.
If this engine was sludged up I could understand the problem but thats not the case. Lifters? pushrods? take apart ,clean and put back in??? I'm open to suggestions. Terry If the lifters are removed and reused, they do need to go back in the same holes and with plenty of lube on their faces to minimize any camshaft lobe wear issues.Note: This thread moved from the Classifieds to the Technical section.

Tnx again guys. I found out few years ago by calling tech reps at diff oil companies their SM oils have diff quanities of zinc and diff weights also. That's why I use the Citgo 10W-30. Had a complete major on my 292 when I did a restortion on a 55 Merc and have never had 55-60 psi in this engine. New bearings,Melling oil pump and the whole nine yards and done by a good reliable mechanic. Both these engines run at a heavy 40 PSI normally and fall to 10 PSI at hot idle on the Merc and about 5 in the truck. What is normal operating PSI supposed to be? Has anyone ever tried hydrualic lifters in these engines yet? Are they available? I've been reading a lot on this site the last few days and it's amazing the amount of new improvments you guys have come up with for these engines. Henry would be proud of you guys. I have been a Ford man for a long time now and have had about every engine they built in the V8 line but never gave a thought to hot rodding a Y block to the degree that goes on today. But what do I know............... Terry

Y-Guy Terry Welcome, and we look forward to your imput as well. If you live any where Columbus Ohio, next week-end is the annual Y-Block Race, party, get together, and international duel of the Aussie's and the Y-guys from the great white north.(if they make it!) It will be well worth your time, to meet and enjoy all the "Y" crowd. Bill

Has anyone ever tried hydrualic lifters in these engines yet? Are they available? Hydraulics are not available. The Y uses a mushroom style lifter unlike any other Detroit engine I've ever seen. The blocks were also not equiped with oil passages in the lifter galleys to provide oil to the lifters.

Tnx for the heads up on the meet in Ohio, sounds like the place to be for me but can't make it. Been puttsing with this sick engine some more and attempting to fix rear main leak with a jug of Lucas stop leak. It ain't working so will have to replace the seal. Anyone ever change a set of bearings from the bottom laying on your back? As long as I have to drop the pan and do the seal might just as well check the bearings. Think I'll look for help. I don't want to pull the engine b/cuz the front clip was put on after engine was in and I am not up to tearing this truck down. It's a one-of-a-kind rig with good paint. Will probably be looking for parts in the near future. This is my fourth venture at resto redo fixup and definitely the last. Anyone in the WIS Mich area here with a 60's parts truck with parts for sale, 17 inch rims, steering column etc. I'm in Goodman Wi 715 33 6 2495. Terry
