Well we started school Wed. and just finished our first couple days. No work was completed on the T over summer as all the students were gone! Today we started on the headers (going to build some lakes style) found a piece of 3" exhaust tubing and split it down the middle. Took some hose clamps and started at the end tightening them down to get the taper we need to much our 1 3/4' coming out of the flanges. Things were going good till the radius started to get tighter and tube starting flattening and the clamps started slipping. Think we'll have to scrap that attempt. Think we'll try laying it out as a cone on some sheet metal and rolling it, see if that works for us. I'll get some pics up as soon as there is anything worth seeing, great to be back and look forward to sharing the progress with you guys!

started looking around at some options and founds these at Speedway http://www.speedwaymotors.com/Megaphones,1719.html dont think I can but the sheetmetal and have 'em rolled (we dont have a roller) for that price. Hate to buy parts we can make but sometimes you gotta give in when it makes sense. Anyone have another source for these that may be cheaper? Thanks-

I've been told to fill tubing with sand to keep it from flattening. Might be worth a try.

found some that are actually a little more expensive but sound like the quality is very good, going to order those tomorrow or the next day, I'll update you guys when there is any progress!

Hey Dan: I just had a thought. Load up your shop students and take a school approved and paid field trip to Columbus this weekend and let them meet some of the nicest people in the car hobby and see some interesting drag racing.

probably next on the agenda will be mounting a rad. and grill shell, might have to shorten the frame a touch to get it all looking good (hope not, but that is why we have it tacked right now)...

Update, we purchased a set of cones from www.lakeheaders.com/ and am very pleased with the quality and the service, a little bit more expensive than the Speedways but well worth it, I highly recommend Matt! Other than that not much progress, a couple students are intermittingly working on the headers when they have down time from their own projects - still need to get the engine together and fired. Another question I would like some opinions on, the style of this build is definately "hot rod" and not "street rod" mounted the voltage reg. on the firewall and I think it kinda clutters it up. What do you guys think about putting it under the seat or firewall? I know it would far less convenient, but how often am I going to need to get at it?? Thanks-
on a seperate not here is a pic of some of the students putting Bendix brakes on a Super Bell dropped axle for another T (flatty powered) that is going together...

RE the volt regulator. Will you have room to mount it on the top or side of the frame rail? Or Maybe work a mount into the radiator support?

PLEASE convert to a alternator and get rid of the voltage regulator.

Dan: Wow, what a shop class! Co-ed too! Is there room for the voltage regulator on the inside of the firewall? That's where it is for my channeled '33 pickup street rod.

I think the generator helps to make it look like a cool old school hot rod . Rebuild it and it will function well for years . I do agree the voltage regulator looks cluttered and messy . Definatey put it out of site or just paint the cover black so it blends instead of stands out . just a suggestion

hey, that generator comes from Texas (a donation from yours truly) and was rebuilt! don't trash talk it...! just kidding... great progress... keep up the good work... have you introduced your students to this website as well as the HAMB?? Mark

Ha Ha, dont worry! It will keep the generator - no alternator on this one, that wouldnt look right. Think maybe I'll try it under the cowl. Havent told the kids about the HAMB, some posts there arent real school friendly. My student last year who was working on a y-block I did introduce him to this site, think he enjoyed it. If anyone here would like to keep an eye on what we are doing in shop can check out our blog - something new I came up, want to see how it works for our class... http://dansautoshopblog.blogspot.com/

Dan, I'd like to follow your school blog, but as I have so far steadfastly resisted getting into blogs, facebook, etc, I'm not sure of the best way to get your blog updates... can you school an old dinosaur in Texas? thanks, Mark

Mark- I am also new to the world of blogs, if I understand correctly all you need to do is click the above address (I will check it and see if it is valid) and then all you need to do is read whatever posts you care to. I dont think you have to sign up or anything like that?? Trying to figure out right now how to post classroom pics to the posts, I am sure its possible, just havent learned how yet...
