While doing my checkup, I made the difficult decision to replace my points as a preventative measure. The difficulty was in spending money on new points when I have this electronic unit about ready to go in. Looking back, I think it was a good decision.
Maybe that is what happens when one uses a coil which states to "use with an external resistor" without a resistor!? They may have lasted through the trip but with my luck, they would have given up right in the middle of the longest span of any two interstate ramps. They must have been in use for about 7k miles.
Anyhow, it looks like my truck will be leaving my driveway this Thursday morning. Hopefully it will be at the Super 8 in Heath on Thursday evening.

Charlie: That's exactly what happens if you use a resistor coil without a resister. Either get a resistor or a coil that doesn't require one.

I did get a Pertronix 3ohm coil. I measured the one that did that to the points at 2.1ohm. I don't even know where my resistor wire is anymore.

Alright, you guys are going to start to think that I don't have a truck.
Tonight, as one of the last things on my list, I wanted to install new plugs. Not out of necessity. I just wanted to try a different plug. When I pulled #8, I noticed something peculiar. The porcelain is missing! I have no idea when this happened. I never noticed a change in the way it was running and it is running well. Anyway, I don't want to take it on a 1400 mile trip until I find out why it did this. So, once more, the truck will not be present.
I'm upset because I was feeling good about this year.

Charlie: If that is a Champion plug, it happens frequently. Just put your new plugs in and come on north.

I felt around as best I could with my pinky and I felt something in the piston. It should be completely smooth, other than the fly cuts and I wasn't reaching far enough to get to those. The plugs indicate it is a little lean. I have neglected to really check it since the initial setup of the Holley. I couldn't find the next larger jet locally. Summit has them but I couldn't make it in time. I don't want to make the trip if it is lean and lean enough to cause that. I'd rather be safe and check it out when I get back.

Use a VW coil, has a built in resistor. It's been working for me. Terry.

John, yes they are my comments exactley, champion plugs, f11y, f14 y are notorious for dropping the porcelain insulator part of the plug, I have found NGK plugs have far more output and reliable. Good luck on the weekend. Regards aussiebill.

I went the next size up with the jets. I was going to do a compression test but I've opted not to. It will either be good or bad. It's running well. If it's bad, I'd rather not know. If it gets more in depth than this, I'll start another post.

I came up with a theory about the spark plug. It happened in the same cylinder that dropped the exhaust push rod when Chuck was in town. The first thing we did was to get the pushrod loose. When we started the engine, we heard knocking (the exhaust valve wasn't opening at all after freeing the pushrod) , and removed the plug wire. I suspect that that knocking jarred the porcelain which slowly fell apart.
In about 2 weeks, I'll do my check-up for this year. Hopefully I'll find a plug with porcelain intact.
