I'm in Dearborn at my daughters. She has a 2001 Dodge Caravan (not my fault) that appears to have a bad fuel pump. Local shop gave her an estimate and said the timing belt had to be changed too. The belt is not broken but I don't know if it jumped. Anyone have experience with this job? I know the pump is in the tank and the belt is buried.

Do any of you guys know of a honest w00t mechanic around here you could recommend? I'm probably going to have to have the work done somewhere. Estimate started at $1500 but went down (at the same shop) to $600. I find the quick change of price suspicious. Help! Chuck in Dearborn (this week)

Chuck:

Can't help with a mechanic recommendation, but the timing belt thing is a preventative measure.  A lot of engines crash the pistons into the valves when a belt breaks.  I don't know about Dodges.  Gordon Payne lives in Trenton, he may know of an honest mechanic.  Is that an oxymoron?

The shop was trying to get some money from you....t-bet isnt all that hard on that van and the fuel pump will only take 1hr labor to do... the belt is aprox at max 40dlrs on the high side.. from all data... fuelpump labor 1.3hrs and on the belt it would be good to know what engine as the 3.3l has a chain not a belt...well the 3.8l has a chain on it too... i think they were just going to try and get you for 600dlrs for the fuel pump/
