Sorry to ask about an FE not a Y- block but..
My 272 with 312 parts needs to be rebuilt badly. Heads are good, intake manifold is 4bl 312 is the good one, dist. is new...but where I live there is no one I trust to rebuilt the engine..new cam, pistons, etc. etc. I think I can get it rebuilt this winter for about 4 grand in and out. I read about the experts on this site having problems with their engine and tappets from China that almost melt away and cams that dissolve.
I don't want to have to go back and forth to the engine shop complaining that the rebuild stinks.
Or, I can pick up a rebuilt 390 for $1800US plus I can get a C6 for about 500, plus putting it in.
My car is not original matching, the block is from a 272...don't know if bored out or not.
I plan on replacing all the suspension bushings when the engine is out to tighten up the front end too. This I can do without paying someone else.
Help, someone make up my mind for me!

Hi Gordie, Sounds like you've already made up your mind to go with the 390/ C6 combo. Since the FE engines were available in '58 Fords, it should be an easy swap. I prefer the Y blocks but have also had good luck with the FE engines in the past. If you are concerned about the quality of the rebuild on your Y block, you can always have the machine work done and then assemble it yourself. That's what I did and have been very happy with the result. If you buy your cam and lifters from John Mummert you won't have to worry about them. And when you do buy lifters, you can have them tested for hardness before installation. Good luck, Nick Brann - K.C., MO

Gordie, When I go to auto shows and watch peoples reaction to different engines, a well defined and engineered detailed yblock seems to get alot more attention than FE or scrub small blocks. Been there done that learned my lesson when it comes to having conversations about engines. I personally have more fun with the yblock than anyother engine I have owned. FEs are good engines but when it comes to beauty nothing better than a Healthy yblock in my view .

I like Y-blocks because they are something different. The FE is a good engine, but as mentioned before they don't get the attention like the Y-block. They resemble modern engines too much. I buy a lot of NOS parts on eBay. I'm not sure that off shore parts are as bad as some reports, but Y-blocks were American engineering and deserve American parts. I have bought a lot of stuff from Egge Machine. They manufacture a lot of stuff and they will tell you the origin. I can't really recommend a rebuilder because I do it myself. However, I have outsourced some work, with the understanding that either I furnish the parts or at least work with the rebuilder with the parts. I feel like it is my money. If I don't feel like spending it on Asian parts, I don't. I'm sure that there are people on this site who can recommend a rebuilder. If you are prepared to spend 4k, you might consider buying a used 292 as a core. There is a big difference in a stock 272 and 292. The cost of a rebuild is the same. Everyone has their own opinion, but I prefer a 292 .030 over compared to a 312.

Thanks for the input. I am going to meet with an engine rebuilder this week. We'll see what he thinks/knows.
