I took out the heads and valley pan this morning, ran the oil pump with a drill, very little dribble on the right side and the cylinder walls have enough scoring to cause the smoke it had.

I decided it is rebuild time, I called as machine shop I have delt with for years and he says no problem he is just finishing one, so here are my questtions:

the heads are marked ecz are they good heads?

the pistons are .030 and the blocked had a marking of d03 - 01, can the walls handle .060 without running super hot?

I have headers, although they have small tubes, and plan on using a tri-power set-up, can you recommend a good cam for me, it will be strictly street driven, not raced.

Thanks,

Mike

The engine should handle .060 easy. My 312 has been pushed out too .112 after sonic testing of course. Make sure the new cam bearings are oriented correctly too insure oil too both sides of the block and heads. Your center cam bearing may have slightly turned in the block thus somewhat starving one side??? If turned enough then both sides could be shut off. The reason problems like this happens is due too using nondetergent oils and not changing oil and filter often enough.Crud and sludge can kill anything.w00t Good luck on the rebuild

I agree, but this engine was super clean inside, like it was well taking care of.

Hey Mike! When you do get it stripped down, post what you found as far as the lack of oil problem.

Go with the isky E-4 it has the torque down where you feel it driving around. I'm running 3x2's and the isky E-4.

Mark, as You all mentioned, it was the cam bearing, seems to have worn to the point of effecting the oil passage. The Last time the engine was done apparently they didn't change the cam bearings. sigh !

The e4 cam can be run with stock lifters, pushrods, and rockers?

Yup.

Mike,

Bite the bullet and use new lifters from Mummert and new springs. Your springs are probably 40 odd years old and the old lifters will destroy your new cam. In the long run you'll cost yourself money trying to reuse the old parts. Have you considered finding a 292 instead or rebuilding the 272?

If you are trying to keep costs down, you might consider finding a 292 that will freshen up with a hone job and rings and a valve grind. Drive it while you are building the engine of your dreams. Thats how we did it 50 years ago. The 292 might surprise you.

Here in NY thats like finding ne needle in a haystack, and there are no haystacks here ! Went to a swap meet today, hundreds of parts tables, not one y-block part, and only 2 cars in the show with Y's.
