I've been trying to find a COM and think I've found one.It has an iron bellhousing and case with an aluminum tailshaft. It was in a 60 pickup, but the owner thinks it had been put in there in the past. The engine was a Y-block.Does anyone know if this is for sure a COM?

Paul:

With the shift lever unhooked, shift the trans lever through its full travel and count the detents.  A COM will have 6 detents, a FOM will have 5.  FMX also has 6.

Thanks John,

The transmission is up there in your neck of the woods,350 miles from here,so I'm trying to be sure before I drive up there. The man that has it is not real knowledgeable about the old Ford automatics, but he said he will try what you suggest and count the detents. An FMX would never have an iron bell, would it?I guess it could be an FMX that's been converted to work on a Y-block.

Thanks again for the help!!!!
