can the crankcase vent be moved

does anyone know if the crankcase vent on the lower left front of the 272 can be plated over and a pcv system be installed in its placeon the upper part of the engine ? Were the later 272 ,292 312 done this way? mine is a 56 f100

Yes! Easiest way is to get hold of a T-Bird valley pan.They have a baffled hole at the rear for the roadraft tube which goes down the back on the Birds because of ground clearance concerns.You can also try to modify yours by building a tin baffle on the underside and drilling a hole through the pan.Baffle stops oil from being sucked into the PCV valve.The hole on the Bird pan takes a grommet and PCV valve.Run a line to to centre of intake manifold and drill and tap for a fitting to hook the line into.Should be as close to centre of manifold as possible.Do not use the fitting at rear of manifold because rear cylinders will run lean.Air is drawn in as it is now through the oil cap.Remove the roadraft tube and put a cup type frost plug in the hole.Put the existing bolts back in because the threaded holes go through the block and oil will pump out.Don't ask how I know.Benefits-no smoke under motor at idle,no "gas " smell in the garage and its good for the air quality.There are several topics on this if you search previous topics.

Thanks Mark for the quick response! That smokey oiley residue drives me crazy ,cleaning it often. Probably trying too hard to preserve my restoration as long as possible.

Why a PCV valve or system?

I used an after market oil filler cap that is not vented and has a 1/2 inch diameter port coming out at a 90 degree angle. I added a hose to that and put a PCV valve in line to a vacuum port in the middle of my intake manifold. This will not need the baffled valley pan because it draws from the oil fill pipe. I have used this set up for 25 years and never added a place for air to be drawn in. BUT at full throttle drag strip runs there is no vacuum so an breather is necessary. I only find this when I am on the nitrous. I hate to add breathers to my Tbird valve covers. A couple weeks ago I drilled holes in the underside of the cap to vent it but I have not proved that out yet. If I am not on the nitrous I have never had any problems with the non vented cap as mentioned earlier.
