I don't know how this can happen, overrev or cheap valves? I do occasionally rev it to 6000 rpm

I was running the YS-270 cam with the 105# springs on Mummert's site

1.5" and 1.78" valves made by qualcast, keepers are of the same brand, may be these cheap parts are the problem.

what do you guys think?

all the valves got nicked by the keepers just like this picture, I was going to cut down the guides to install viton seals, but it looks like I need a new set of valvetrain components as well. what a day.

HoLun, do the umbrella seals show signs of damage? I would say that is either valve float or the retainers are hitting the seals.

The galling on the stem looks like the top of the valve guide was closing up, perhaps from contact by the retainer.

I'm told Qualcast stuff is US made but have no experience with their valves. There are 3 grades of keepers. Stock replacement stamped,  hardened stamped and hardened/machined.

The stock 2 piece retainers are heavy and can cause valve float at lower rpm than lighter parts.

no, the umbrella seals are in good shape, no signs of damage, the keepers are 19 cents each, I am betting they are the stock replacement stamped. going to take a close up pics of the keepers.

the 2 piece retainers are original stock off these C0AE heads

these keeper might be hardened? I don't know

the edge of the keepers are what nicked the valve, when I was removing them from the head, the retainer and the keeper were stuck, i had to hammer them off.

HoLun, they are definitely stamped. Hardened keepers are usually identified by either green die or black oxide color.

Interesting that the keepers show no signs of trauma, just the valves.

they are green, theres some green left over the cad plating in a couple of the keepers in the pic

i think the size might be slight bit off vs the valve, you can see theres multiple spots wore off inside the keeper, anyways, I am going for sealed power set next, the sealed power stuff, even tho some is made overseas, i have no problem with them
