I've decided to run a set of Mellowtones on my T-bird rather than stock mufflers, however I don't know (other than inlet/ outlet size) the length to order. Would anyone happen to know what the length of a stock muffler is, or where I could find that info? -Thanks- /Duck

Dont know the length but I have 22" Smittys on my 55. They went on with no issues at all.

Duck, have you ever compared the tone of the Mellowtone to Smithy. I am old enough to remember what the Smithys sounded like 50 years ago and the new ones sound different. They have a harsher sound. I am looking for the low pitched rumble that Y-blocks were famous for. I have seen the Mellowtone, but I'm not sure I've ever heard them. I just bought my 4th 56 Ford and I'm still looking for the sound.

Thanks Fellas, I appreciate any help I can get w/ this. As far as Smitty's go, it's my understanding they're now made offshore, and rather poorly, as well. The Mellowtones are made in Indiana and come two ways; with a fiberglass packing, and a shredded metal packing. The latter being the way to go for a low rumble without the "rap" on deceleration. I'm opting for the metal packing, and hope to get a set ordered sometime this week. Here's a link for them... http://www.brockmancustomparts.com/page2.html Aud- incoming PM... -Thanks- /Duck

I am anxious to hear what they sound like. I always had genuine Smithy steel packs 40 to 50 years ago. I am dying to hear that sound again.

Duck:

Maybe Brockman has an applications list and can send you mufflers that are exact fit.  I remember when I first got my '56 Bird it had glasspacks on it.  Since the original muffler had a side inlet and center outlet, the glasspacks had angled ends so they would line up with the exhaust and tail pipes.

Measured mine last night. They are new from Casco and were the same size as the old rusty ones that were there so I'm guessing they are original numbers.  The muffler was 15" long, 8" wide. 3 1/2" thick. The inlet is offset to one side and the outlet goes out the center. The over all length including inlet and outlet pipes was 26". If you need more let me know. I've got the frame and motor setting complete with no body right now so it's easy to measureSmile

This is probably a dumb question but if Tbird pipes are (I think) 1.75" and mufflers have 2" ends does this mean some kind of reducer is needed? If so, would this impact on the space available?

Fellas, thanks for the input- I see I misspoke concerning the glass packed/ metal packed mufflers. The glass packed are the ones that sound less "harsh". A few things I found out about the Brockman's today; they only come 2" in/ out UNLESS you pay 20% extra. The inlet/ outlet are NOT available w/ any kind of an offset. The mild steel cased version are only available in raw steel (no finish). I was told that to ship 2 from Indiana to Michigan would be "around" $20.00 (via USPS) All tolled, (not counting the expense incurred to adapt these to my use) $94.00 & change w00t for two glasspacks. I passed, and opted instead for two glasspacks made in the U.S.A. by Hedman from Summit Racing. Total saved $30.00. What a day... /Duck
