Guys,

I need to either replace the padded dash on my 56 Fairlane, or paint it. I guess to do a proper job of painting, I should remove the entire dash assembly from the car.

Looks like pulling the dash out will be a big job... Anybody have any tricks they want to share?

Also, anybody have a source for a replacement padded dash other than "Justdashes.com"?

Many thanks for any suggestions.

Time and patience are needed. Just be careful of the wiring. Check with Macs auto parts or Dennis carpenter. They should have what you need .  Dash removal isnt that difficult just takes time. Worst part is re-installing it and not being able to find where you put the screws.

The first thing to do is remove the front seat so you can have plenty of room to work. There is a lot of things to disconnect, take your time and label everything. Take some pics of the underneath before disconnecting anything so you have a reference point. Easier to take pics with the seat out.

Thanks all! Great forum full of good stuff! These later Fords are sure are allot more complicated than the Model T's and A's I'm used to working on! =-)

I guess while I have the dash out, it would be a great time to replace the vacuum wiper motor with an electric (previous post). I am planning on buying a conversion kit from one of the vendors...

Anybody have an thoughts on the electric wiper conversion, pro or con?

Thanks!

If you are going to drive it a lot I would definitely do it. I converted mine just because I didnt want vacuum wipers. Get a copy of Street Rodder magazine in the back ther is an ad for wiper conversion. Price is dependent on who you contact. Around $150-200. Well worth the price.

The one on my 56 is from Newport engineering bought from Tee-Bird.Com.I just  went to the Newport site and they sell direct. Its great because you use the stock mounting bracket and arms.Happy with mine

I always like to paint the flip side with a light color of paint. Any light color will help you to see and navigate once you are back together and reinstalling everything. Last time I did this I used some silver I had left over.

Ditto on Newport Engineering and painting the backside a light color. I have three cars with Newport's conversion and never had any problems with them.

AS far as the back of the dash, I did this to my 56 Bird and 54 Victoria and it makes it much easier to work behind there.
