Trouble in Y block land in Wis. Was attempting to convert my old supposedly 272 Y block engine today from cannister type oil filter to spin on. Can't be done because clutch rod linkage to close and won't lenght of filter fit. So put the 90 degree cannister housing back on engine with a home made gasket and have an oil leak there. What I need is the gasket that goes between the block and oil filter housing. It's almost 5 inches across and has a center strip running side to side that the mounting bolt and return line(?) to the block fit. Can't find one anywhere. Does anyone out there have one for sale? This is an ECG block, made for cars and trucks. It's in a truck but have no way of knowing originality. Tnx Terry

Terry, If you are using a Ford # Fl1a filter or an aftermarket equal, there is a shorter filter that will work . I Dont remember the part #, but any ford dealer would know it. It was equipped on 80s and 90s ford trucks that had clearance issues . Frank

I had a 1974 Mustang II 2.8V6 that used that short filter also. A PH8A would fit that application also. Terry, I have one of the 90 degree adapters here that used the std round gasket to attach to the block. I don't know if it was correct but that's how it was put together.

FL300 Motorcraft is the shorter version of a FL1A. Motorcraft filters have the Ford Oval on them as well.

And you can always get a kit for remote mounting the filter.

I used a motorcraft # FL-332 which was also shorter than the Fl-1-A.Threads are the same just shorter can.

Chrysler used the same threads with a shorter can. Fram PH43 or its equivalent.

Thanks for the info men but I've decided to keep the old 90 degree filter housing and adapt this spin on conversion to it. Now instead of having the old cannister the spin on filter is in its place. The reason for this was the double sided fitting that comes with the spin on setup will not thread into the block. The hole in the block is smaller than the pipe threaded fitting that comes with kit. I put this same conversion on another engine from a 64 Ford F600 Heavy Duty engine year ago with no problem. Why did FoMOCo tap this block diff? Probably will never find the original type gasket that was in this engine and will try a regular oil filter type in it like John says. Terry

It shouldn't be a pipe thread.
The cannister oil filter comes with a gasket.

I'm sure it can be had separately. Here is a list of filter gaskets. Use the info in the description of the filter to find the correct gasket.

tnx for gasket info Charlie, no prob getting oil filter gaskets but there is a problem finding the oi l filter cannister housing gasket. Will try just a round one. Don't think I will ever find the correct one but more than willing to find one that works. Terry

There were two different types of spin-on filter adapter kits, one sold by Ford and another one by the jobbers.
The Ford one you have to remove the big adapter bolt that takes a 1 1/4 inch socket to remove and then discard the check valve plate that says "top" that the big nut holds in place with the hollow hole. You then install the "new" adapter assembly by using a gasket, the new supplied plate and a new bolt to replace the one you removed from the engine block, one end fits the spin on filter and the other threads into the block to replace the bolt you removed.
The other spin on kit (the jobber one) has a plate similar to the Ford adapter plate however the centre hole is about 7/8 inch diameter and you thread the new supplied adapter nut inside the large 1 1/4 socket sized bolt you would remove if you had bought the Ford kit (also the long bolt from the cartridge filter housing threads into this adapter nut). The plate on the jobber kit is usually thinner material and subject to many leaks.

Terry; I know what you are talking about with the clutch linkage and clearance to the oil filter. You can make the spin-on adapter work by using a shorter Ford type filter. Several brands of shorter filters are available including Hastings. I would say away from Fram. Rono

Well I guess I have finally determined this engine to be a 55 or 56. In 57 Ford went to a spin on oil filter eliminating the old 90 degree housing and cannister filter. Well now....not quite right truck engines had them up to 1964. So I have a 55 thru 57 truck engine. All info says ECG engines were made 55 to 57 in Cleveland and used in cars and trucks. OK Terry, you have a 272 truck engine. Finally found one man here in Wis. that knew what gasket I am looking for, and older fellow and lifetime engine bullder. Yep he said I know exactly what gasket you're looking for. They came with the engine gasket rebuild kit,54,55, 56. I'll call my contacts where I always go to for the hard to find stuff. If I don't call you back in 30 minutes it isn't to be found. That was 3PM yesterday and it now 9:22AM a day later. ZIP He told me that to use just a regular round gasket without the crossbar in it would hamper the filtering of all the oil, probably let some of bypass and not do the right cleaning job. Also found out that possibly the spin-on kit for a Ford 300 6cyl may have the same block threading and wilth a short filter all would be good in Y-block land. Will find out in the near future. Any y-blockers out there have any experience with this? Just another day in paradise. Tnx Terry
