Got a load of engine sheet metal parts back from the machinist the other day, and found out that the screen on the oil pickup tube still looked to be pretty clogged up. The machinist said he couldn't do any more with it??? There is a baffle/plate that covers most of the screen. Is it ok to ditch the baffle or is it really necessary (55 Ford Club Sedan, 292, C2AE block, stock oil pump) to keep? How can I clean that screen effectively? (looks like old oil deposits and black crud)w00t

Do you have a torch? Burn it off and wire brush it! Chuck

If its just oil crud, brushing it with gasoline should dissolve it. Maybe soak it first. Doesn't the guy have a hot tank?

The parts were hot tanked, I was told...this is the same machine shop for the high dollar outfit on the east coast called White Post Restorations. I know it sounds ridiculous. It is an oil pickup tube for crying out loud. Funny thing was, I scanned the box of parts, paid and walked out. As I was stowing them in my trunk, I noticed the tube and screen and all the deposits left on it. As I walked back in holding the part, here came one of the employees - he knew exactly what I was upset about.

Why didn't I think of the torch idea??? Used to be a great pyromaniac back in the day - I have this great story about my younger brother, a wet pile of leaves, a can of ether, a match, explosion, singed hair, rolling and laughing on the fall grass...Tongue

I will just burn it out. Do you think I can get away with taking off that baffle altogether? I have an F100 Y block pickup tube that didn't even come with a baffle, only the screen is there.

Burning it is a great idea, I didn't think of that when I was cleaning mine. I used a bead blaster, it worked good but the burning would probably be faster. Clean the screen and put it back on. If by accident you ever get a piece of gasket or RTV or some other chunk of junk in the pan it will keep it from getting into the pickup tube and stopping it up. Not a good situation!
