My 55 originally had a 4 bbl 272 and it looked to be a dull orange somewhat close to the chevy orange,most of the restored 55s I seen they had the motor painted red so where can one find the correct dull orange.

We use Duplicolor DE-1632 Chrysler Industrial Red. Not really red, not really orange. It's the closest to correct we have found and was recommended to me by a T-Bird restorer. It doesn't cover well unless you prime everything with red oxide primer.

T-Bird suppliers sell spray cans made by "Seymour". Factory paint was likely Ditzler (?), but since all paint-system formulas/chemicals have changed significantly over the years, no way to be sure the color would be identical. Since 50s era red pigments faded quite rapidly when exposed to heat/oxygen/sunlight, unless you could find an original 50s engine that was immediately pulled upon dealer delivery, vacuum-packed, and stored in a cool dark place, no way to be sure.
So, when doing restoration, do you match the color all engines would be after running for 50 years (near scrub orange), or take a best guess re: what they looked like when they rolled off the assembly line?

Or you could do a poor job with some red and let it fade just like the original

I saw enough Y-Blocks back then to have pretty good idea of what they should look like. The paint I mentioned is very close. I have heard from customers that bought paint from restoration suppliers and said it looked like scrub orange. I don't have much control over what it fades to in 10 years.

If it's a truck Y-block it could also be yellow.
There's a REALLY long thread over on the FTE site that speaks to the color of the truck engines. It also depends on what size truck it goes in. F-600's in 55 had yellow Y-blocks for example.
I'm using John Deere yellow on mine!

Just noticed: Jeff, just look at 55Birdman's signature photo. The front of the car looks like the engine in '55, and the rear after it fades.
