I get this question so often I thought I might post this info so at least some Y-Block folks will be informed.

When you install the timing set on a Y-Block, with the marks in the correct position and the correct number on pins between the dots, ect ect, the CAM WILL BE IN OVERLAP! The distributor rotor will point at #6.

This is correct. The timing set was not made incorrectly. Everything is okay. The sun will come up tomorrow.

I think everyone who has put a Y block together has been caught by this one, either for a long time or a short time, depending on how the brain cells are functioning.

And you are right, John, barring being hit by a meteorite, the sun will come up tomorrow.

Regards

hello all. I'm a newbie to the y-blocks and havent had to replace the timing chain yet so i got a question. If the rotor is pointing to #6 i am guessing that #6 is at tdc on the firing stroke for #6 cylinder?

It's all an illusion anyway. The sun doesn't really come up.

Went to a remote farmhouse a while back to pickup some tools bought on ePay. Old woman was selling off her late husbands gear. I casually mentioned my Y-Block interest, and the old lady said: "you mean the engine with the funny timing chain setup?". Could of knocked me over with a feather.

I had my Y-block rebuilt by a local machine shop that had an older guy doing the work. I asked him if he had ever done any Y-blocks and he said a few...

Now you all have me wanting to pull the timing cover to check if he put it together correctly with the marks at 1500 UTC!!!Tongue

Yes, its amazing the numerous times i am contacted re the timing chain set up, by mechanics and people who should know. Ive allways  stuck to the principle that when # 6 cyl lifter is in the rocking position, one almost up and other starting to go down, ( split overlap) then #1 cyl will be on compression, therefore the camshaft is in correct relationship to crankshaft, this is allways the check to do after installing timing chain. Best regards bil.

Charley, my local newspaper lists Sunrise and Sunset times.

One guy went so far as to insist that the timing set I sold him was defective. "No way that could be correct" to have the valves in overlap on #1 when you put the timing set on.

Maybe THAT's the reason I slowed down at Columbus. The timing chain is defective!!BigGrin

Ignorance is bliss! I had no idea about this. I just assembled it the 1st go round. I degreed it the 2nd go round so I knew it was right.

Frank, are you sure it was the t/chain that was "defective" ????? ha.ha.
