Off Topic 63 Fairlane Question

Did the 63 Falrlane with a 221 engine come with a C-4? I thought the C-4 came out a little later and possibly the two speed Fordo was used. Add to this the bellhousing bolt pattern issue between the early and later small blocks so i'm not sure what is correct.

The 221 and 260 were available in 1962 & 1963, but I believe the 221 went away mid-year. The 260 and 289 were both available in 1963 also.

Can't recall when the bell housing changed...

The C-4 didn't come out until the 64 models.The 63 was either the little 2 speed  Fordomatic or a Cruisomatic.

I had five bolt 221 and two speed Fordo in '63 Fairlane for years. Now she's with 302 and AOD.

The first year for the C4 was for the 1964 models.  The C4 actually got it’s name from being introduced for the 1964 model year.  The C6 was also named using the same thought process as it was introduced in 1966.  That same naming convention doesn’t apply to the C3 and C5 trannies though.

One thing to consider is that there were mostly two bellhousing ends, a five bolt and a six bolt. The C4 and C6 can be found with either, and early V8s (pre 65) and mid I6s (64 to 65) have the five bolt, later V8s and some 6s have the six bolt. Loads of guys in the Fairlane Club of America the C4 on early Fairlanes with smaller engines like the 221 and 260. In the FCA we all talk about these early 5-bolt transmissions and engines like they are holy artifacts (I don't know why, I just try to be inconspicuous and act like I know why).

Strike that, the C-4 can be found with 5-bolt bell, the C-6 (i think) is some kinda mod.



Also, the 64 is the same as a 63. They are totally interchangeable, except the trim lines. We lost the 170 (and maybe the 221, I can't remember).

You are correct about the model years of C4 and C6.  However, I don't think that you find that explaination in any internal Ford document.

A booklet was given to us at work on the 50th anniversary of Ford automatic transmissions.

It indicates the Simpson gear set design were of the "C" family and the earlier BW licensed design were of the "X" family, i.e. FX, MX, HX, FMX were of the Raxigneaux design.

This is why the C3 and C5 don't correlate to 1963 or 1965.

Incidently, the original code name for the C4 was XP transmission, and the C6 was XPL transmission.
