Got a short block (no heads) out of storage to rebuild the other day. While scraping off the crud, I discovered that it appears the original block color was GOLD. This is a 312 and had spin-on filter and '57-'58 type ball bearing dist. breaker plate. It has standard bore and crank so I don't believe it has ever been rebuilt and there are no traces of any other color on it. I've never seen one this color...Does anyone know what it came out of? THANKS

Maybe later Merc?

’57 Merc 312’s were gold.  Not sure about the colors on the later model Mercs though.  You can possibly verify the engine year by looking at the date codes on the block and heads.
